Don't get me wrong, I love P Diddy's song and the motivation behind it is beautiful, but you can't put it up against the original and genuinely believe it has a fighting chance. Besides, it's not a remake so it really isn't a version of the original anyway. Huge amounts of sampling, that's about it.

Doesn't really say much about hip hop does it? One of the few songs to do that for you and it's not even original.

@irishx: Nothing in music is really original if we honestly get down to it, and sampling/interpolations have always been a major part of hip hop so that doesn't really bother me either. The content and overriding theme of the song was what really struck a cord with me. The song borderline works as a eulogy for Notorious B.I.G to me IMO. A lot of rappers have made songs dedicated to fallen loved ones, but I think Puffy really managed to make something that'd make you appreciate the bond between him and his friend, even to an outsider.

Diddy didn't even write the song....or probably any of his songs for that matter. Sauce Money wrote the lyrics and The Police, obviously, provided the music, and he only "wrote" the song after Lox, who had little notoriety at the time, gained more attention after he released a song as a tribute to B.I.G.

So Diddy only probably really made that song because he knew it would elevate his career a bit more....what a guy!

Why would Puff make the song To further his career? By time Biggie passed in March 1997, Puffy and Bad Boy were already household names whom had the rap game on freaking lock down (Dropping hit single after hit single) Puffy could have never put out that song and would have been just fine. I mean, your conspiracy doesn't make even a little sense.
