If you're reading this, you obviously love comics, as do I. We all enjoy the exploits of our favorite heroes and villain. But we all dread the word commonly tossed in the direction of anyone caught dead in public with a comic in hand: nerd. Notably, there are many comic book readers who fit this pejorative term, but not all. If anyone who ever read a comic book is a nerd, then anyone who ever played a game of football is a meat-headed jock.
I consider comic reading to be like a measuring glass, there is a line you have to stop at before it begins to overflow. This is where you have reached the title of nerd. My friend, as much as it killed me to hear it, gave up comics today. He sold all his comics and has now given up his passion for drawing as well, leaving the comic book company he and several others swore to create with me. He said there was more to life then comics and that he wanted to be more outgoing. When I asked why he felt that way, he explained to me that he knew the seven systems of something or other from Green Lantern and their respective planets along with many other pointless facts. It was at that point that I realized the he had hit that line. I believe in a balanced lifestyle, I freakin' love comics, but I also make plenty of time for other aspects of my life. Hopefully, I can help him find what he's looking for and guide him back to a good balance between comics and an active life. If all else fails, I'll take him to the Summer Slaughter concert and get the excess nerd beaten out of him in a torrent of metal manliness. That always works for me.
The "N" Word
" Too much of anything is a bad thing. 'Cept for Jesus, girls, and buffalo wings, but that's just me. "lol
" @Aronmorales said:Yes, lol indeed." Too much of anything is a bad thing. 'Cept for Jesus, girls, and buffalo wings, but that's just me. "lol "
" I'm not a nerd, I'm an intellectual badass. "Well, I'm not a psychopath, I'm socially impaired. Whatever floats your boat.
" @Aronmorales said:Adventure Time FTW" Too much of anything is a bad thing. 'Cept for Jesus, girls, and buffalo wings, but that's just me. "lol "
I have no problem with that word at all....I'm a nerd and proud of it....don't try to hide who you are, that just makes it worse....embrace your nerdness and be proud of it
" Too much of anything is a bad thing. 'Cept for Jesus, girls, and buffalo wings, but that's just me. "I dunno, you could become Jesus if you have too much of him!
And by that, I mean dead!
Also, sir, you must have one hell of an iron stomach if there's no such thing as too many buffalo wings for you!

Which would lead to the same fate as the one's who become to much like Jesus.
Personally, I think that if you enjoy something, who gives a crap if you overindulge in it? Reading comics doesn't hurt anyone, (so long as you do it legally, of course), it's not obtrusive to anyone else's lifestyle. It's just a hobby that can be quietly enjoyed anywhere and everywhere. I don't think you can ever read too many comics, or know too much about them. If it's your interest, and people berate you for it, that's their problem.
People used to call me a nerd. That stopped when I established that my being a nerd was also indicative of the various ways in which I could kill them and have it look like an accident, have the body never recovered, etc...
Of course, it was all in jest, fortunately, they didn't know that.
" @FadeToBlackBolt: I'm trying to convince him that there's no reason to be ashamed of reading comics. That's why I'm trying to bring him back. And it isn't necessarily about over-exposure to comics, it's about that being the only real thing he does. If you do anything that's good, but only that thing, you can begin to feel that there's more to life. It's not about moderation, it's about balance. "Does he have an account on here? I know that sometimes reading comics can feel lonely and that can make you resentful of the medium, but I got over that once I started talking to people on here.
" @FadeToBlackBolt: not sure. And his dad's been picking on him for a long time for drawing. I think he finally beat that passion out of him. Like I always say, growing up means giving up everything that makes you happy. To add insult to injury, the guy was an A, B student and his dad signed him up for summer school. bastard. "That's awful. :(
People can be such scum.
i have always considered myself a nerd.. and honestly, i think its cool.. but no one has ever told me i'm a nerd.. despite wearing glasses and having comic books in my bag.. i have always considered brains better than brawn.. and take it from me, chicks love guys who can discuss the entire theory of relativity in 3 different languages while walking down runways and going model test shots.. LOL!!!
When someone tells me I'm a nerd for liking comics, star wars, etc.
I just say 'Yeah I am a nerd.. but im a nerd thatll beat the sh*t out of you'..
and they shut up.
-shrug-.
Personally, I think it's more in attitude. I read more comics than my friends, who I would consider Nerds, and I've got an external Hard Drive filled with more than 40 years worth of at least 4 Marvel comic lines, as well as random collections of scans of other series, and a hefty folder full of a selection of cartoons from the 90s untill now, and a large collection of Doctor who New series, and a few old series episodes (All of which procured legally, and protected under fair use, for DVD copying rights and all), but my attitude about it makes me less of a nerd, since I don't do many of the things nerds are known for, like esoteric discussions about 'nerd passions,' and stuff. Also confidence helps. If you are confident that your interests are legitimate then they are (unless your interests include child porn, or something).
"Reading comics doesn't hurt anyone"I got a paper cut reading a comic, and that hurt like hell.
Also, I'm a nerd, but I'm in University studying Drama, and I was the goldenboy in my college performing arts, and I'm most definitely not shy. I consider myself the next stage in "Nerdium" (own word). Read comics, have knowlegde about science and strange sciences. And I also get out a lot and party. Not afraid to make a fool out of myself, in fact some times I like it. ::D And I have a killer personality.

" have knowlegde about science and strange sciences."Don't you mean *braceforbadpun* Weird Science? *Plays weird science theme*
" @Supreme Marvel said:That's why I never said "weird"." have knowlegde about science and strange sciences."Don't you mean *braceforbadpun* Weird Science? *Plays weird science theme* "
" I have no problem with that word at all....I'm a nerd and proud of it....don't try to hide who you are, that just makes it worse....embrace your nerdness and be proud of it "
" @King Saturn said:LMMFAO !" Ohhhhhhhhhhh... That "N" Word... :P "I was about to set it off in the B!tch lol "
heh heh...
Just let him be, explore others things in life, all that crap... he'll eventually return to comics or won't. And if he does return, it will be with a less nerdy attitude, if that's your main concern. There IS a lot more to life than comics. So, exactly, too much of anything prevents you form experiencing other things and exploring new passions.
