Ah...Yes, the Deep Web, Darknet, Onionland, Eepsites, Freenet, .clos domains, .loky, bwhahahahahahahahah.
@hylian: Seriously, most of it is not as bad as everyone thinks. The .onion sites are a mixture of security privacy enthusiast, boring stupid websites, conspiracy theorists and whistle blowers (Wikileaks Type Sites), then there are the criminal elements, but they are a smaller minority than most people think and they Deep Web is over hyped, IMHO.
OP, if you use common sense and don't click on any link you see you will be fine. There are a lot of good security blogs/forums and a lot of good books to download. Use the main hidden wiki and avoid the Porn and Image boards. Also, make sure you have NoScripts set on the browser to "Forbid Scripts Globally". You may also want to check out the clear net mirror of the hidden wiki. (Don't worry because you won't be able to get to any of the links unless you are using Tor.) http://torhiddenwiki.com/
You may also want to check out Tails, which fits on a flash drive and you can boot up a operating system that uses Tor. When your done reboot your computer and remove the USB and it is back to normal. Link

Finally, .onions are not the only Darknet domains out there. There are: i2p, bit, and Freenet (mostly the same stuff).
There is a supposed picture of the layers of the internet posted above. That is complete BS! There is no Mariana's web, closed-shell system, or Primarch system.
Hopefully, this has helped. I just see so much misinformation floating around the Internet about this. Honestly, most people that visit these domains will be plagued with: slow load times, boring static pages, and largely stuff you could find on the surface web. It is way over-hyped!
Overall, Tor, I2P, and Freenet are excellent ways for people in oppressed countries to communicate privately. In fact, Tor was developed by the US Military. :O
@i_am_lightning: Completely agree! There are many good people and legal sites on the Deep Web contrary to popular belief.
Lol, I swear. I am going to copy all these posts into a text file and every time I see this topic brought up I am going to just paste it.
I forgot to add, Darknet is generally sites that are not indexed by Google. Tor Hidden Service are a very minute fraction of that. You also have dynamically generated sites (think about Expedia whenever you create a travel plan), content behind a login, intranets and VPN's, academic databases, stuff that is blocked from crawling (a site can be opted out of being crawled), and other internet protocols like FTP, Gopher, Usenet, and Telnet.
