Lyrics are my number one priority when picking a band to listen to. I need my for my brain something to pick over, something to ponder, something to imagine, so I ask you, fellow viners, what are the best alternate/punk/indie bands lyrically?
Please no screamo. And while I do like hip-hop, I ask to keep hip-hop artists out of this topic also.
The Band with the best lyrics.
System of a Down, Sevendust, Hail The Villain, Mastodon, and Nine Inch Nails all have some pretty good lyrics.
Not a lyrics fan myself, I see the vocals as a rhythm instrument and view lyrics as inconsequential. A lot of bands I like don't even sing in a language I understand. But this is a list of bands and songs that particularly stand out to me. Not necessarily in your genre, most of them, and you probably already listen to some, but...
Pearl Jam ... Just Breathe, the End, Given to Fly, Jeremy, Black, Elderly Woman Behind a Counter in a Small Town
Pantera ... heavy...Five Minutes Alone, Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills, By Demons be Driven slower...Cemetary Gates, This Love, Hollow
Mudvayne...Death Blooms, Dig, World so Cold, Do What You Do, Dull Boy
Finger Eleven... Broken Words, Tip, Look Above, Thousand Mile Wish
Alkaline Trio...Private Eye, Burn, Sadie, Radio
Bruce Springsteen... My Hometown, I'm on Fire, My City of Ruins, the River, Secret Garden
the Police...King of Pain (many excellent covers. Mudvayne does my favorite)
Panic at the Disco...Lying is the Most fun a Girl can Have Without Taking her Clothes off
Soak...Do It , Drowning
Brand New...sic Transit Gloria
U2...Sunday Bloody Sunday
AFI...the entire Black Sails in the Sunset album
Avett Brothers...Head Full of Doubt Road Full of Promises
Beck...Lost Cause
Damien Rice... the Blowers Daughter
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglove...Falling Slowly, Alone Apart, the Moon, the Hill, If You Want Me (warning, do not listen if emotionally disturbed or thinking of suicide. Some of the most beautifully haunting, saddest, most evocative music ever).
the Rasmus... In Shadows, Bittersweet (with Ville Valo of HIM and Apocalyptica), Funeral Song, Ten Black Roses
Madonna...Like Prayer (not a Madonna fan, Rufio does a great cover), La Isla Bonita
Modest Mouse...the Ocean Breathes Salty
Bad Religion...Struck a Nerve, Infected, really anything on any album
Misfits...She, Dig up Her Bones
and just for fun
The Lonely Island...Jizz in My Pants
No less than 10 different genres... just give some of the others outside your comfort zone a try. If you like lyrics, Death Blooms is about as good as it gets. If you like a particular group or song, let me know and I can match you up with more you should like. . Happy listening. :)

Do you listen to Alkaline Trio? If you haven't and you like Brand New, you should definitely check them out.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds,
Rodney Crowell (his newer stuff like Earthbound and Sex and Gasoline albums)
I, despite my current avatar am not a fan of new generation artists. Solely for the, err...satanic lyrics. (No offense for those who actually listen to them. My honest opinion.) And, like you, I examine the lyrics before fully committing on listening to the song. And, only a drop of artists have lyrics that makes our heart warm. But, I just can't find enough artists that have good lyrics. So, I stick in the late 60's. And everything from the 70's 80's and 90's.
" @Metro_Man: You are awesome. Warren Zevon and Al Green. F-yeah. "
Thanks =)
John Cafferty and the beaver brown band. (Eddie and the cruisers) is also very good.
Talking Heads
Violent Fems
Janes Addiction
Black Crows
Huey Lewis and the news!
Mike & The Mechanics!
I cant belive I forgot these guys.
" I listen to music for the lyrics but hip-hop disqualifies Eminem (and he's not a band)...I guess I'd say blink-182 for the title of band with the best lyrics IMO...specifically the untitled/eponymous (depending on how you look at it) album where all the members hit their peak for me, at least this far in their careers. Other bands with lyrics I have thoroughly enjoyed include Breaking Benjamin (wrote a story to the album Dear Agony once, intertwining the lyrics into the chapters), Three Days Grace, My Chemical Romance (although I have not listened to their new album yet), Billy Talent, Blue October...well actually, I'll just end up listing every band that has some songs I like...but lyrics are rather important to me -for the most part- when listening to music although I can enjoy instrumental music and such. "Was that the story I read, or a completely different project?
" Al Green Cat Stevens Jim Croce Bruce Spingsteen James Taylor Levon Helm Kris Kristopherson Waylon Jennings Fleetwood Mac Eagles Sam Cooke Lenard Cohen Brand New Warren Zevon Frank Zappa Queen A lot of old Blues bands. A lot of old country and blue grass bands. "ALL of these are just fantastic
" @Lance Uppercut said:Sounds pretty cool" @aztek the lost said:completely different, no one's ever read it, it's scrawled across various papers in my room somewhere...but it's eleven chapters (to the eleven tracks)...it's actually based around the story that my character originated from but it goes into details on stuff I never really covered in that and each chapter is a very specific scene where I try to capture what I get from the song "" I listen to music for the lyrics but hip-hop disqualifies Eminem (and he's not a band)...I guess I'd say blink-182 for the title of band with the best lyrics IMO...specifically the untitled/eponymous (depending on how you look at it) album where all the members hit their peak for me, at least this far in their careers. Last thing I listened to that impressed me lyrically is Thursday, but I'm not sure what genre they qualify under. I listened to a few songs off their upcoming album, "No Devolucion"
It really all depends on what you want from the lyrics. Do you want something uplifting? Dark? Clever? Passionate? Moving? Good story-telling?
Here's a list of some of my favorite artists lyrically speaking.
Josh Ritter
Mumford and Sons
Nick cave and the Bad Seeds
James Taylor
Jack Johnson
Levon Helm
Johnny Cash
Mike Ness (Social Distortion)
Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio)
