The American right and race

Posted by Paracelsus (1031 posts) - 9 months, 8 days ago - Show Bio

If I've been critical of the Left in my previous post about the proposed erection of statue honoring "Che " Guevara ( and its tongue tied attitude towards Soviet and particularly Stalinist/Maoist/Castroite oppression in general), I might as well go to another matter nearly as much as a matter of concern to me- the American right wing and race. When forming the modern day US conservative movement, the late William F.Buckley reportedly took care to explicitly purge or otherwise disassociate themselves from Nazi, anti-Semitic and other highly undesirable (or at least socially unacceptable) viewpoints- but significantly he gave anti-black sentiments a free pass). Throughout the 1950s, 60s and right up to the present, the NR has long been noted for its airing of unapologetic bigotry towards people of colour< beginning with its defence of segregation in the South of the US and apartheid in South Africa- "states rights" presumably take priority over civil rights- and just a few months ago John Derbyshire a longtime NR contributor was fired from the magazine for airing racism extreme even by the Review's standards. Opinions difffer as to why Buckley was so indifferent(to put it mildly!) to the long struggle for equal justice for African Americans. Conservatism by definition lays heavy stress on keeping things much the way they are- if it's equality you seek( black America) then why not move to Sweden? It is true that before his death, Buckley later regretted his movement's callous indifference to the Civil Rights movement(see his Wikipedia entry), but the damage has been done. As Malcolm X quipped in his autobiography "the difference between conservatives and liberals in America is that the former say flat out "let's keep the n----rs in their place", wheas the liberals say "no, no, let's keep the "knee-grows " in their place"!". of course it may be argued that the NR is entitled to its views in a free society and so it is- but like leftist apologists for Stalin, Mao or Castro, it is also open to criticism for said views. Of course there are millions of good, decent Americans (of both sexes -Patricia Heaton, Gary Sinise, Kelsey Grammer, Cheryl Ladd, Danny Aiello, my friend Julia Millard-, who would not only be appalled by the charge of generic bigotry but genuinely outraged, but to quote one of the founding fathers of Anglo-American conservatism, philosopher Edmund Burke "evil flourishes when good men-or women- do nothing" If the Left is open to criticism for failing to decry the reality of Soviet oppression, then the Right(esp in America) is likewise due for reproach for failing to accept the transcendantal injustice towards minorities( esp African Americans).

Anybody else think as I do?

I'm not going to hate on you, but judging from every post I ever seen you put on here, don't you think you should be in a different forum?

@Paracelsus: Didn't you mention you're from the UK? You must be so qualified to lambast American bipartisan/biallignment politics.

Why are you so enthralled?

What the hell makes a liberal a Stalin or Castro sympathizer? I've often heard rasicst say, "Go back to Africa", but never to Sweden. You gonna pay to get all these unhappy black people settled into Sweden? And if so can you pay for one white guy's move? Because I think I'm sick of this country.

I asked something similar and he said not to comment on his blogs (which he made public).

Yes I am aware that it might be argued that it is "none of my business" what happens in US politics as i am not an American but what of it?- given that according to today's Times, Paul Ryan , GOP VP candidate has "slagged off " our NHS(National health Service)-and pray tell WHAT possible concern is that to him, I am reminded of the joke about those who can dish it out but sure can't take it-and we BOTH know that this not the first time Americans(esp those running for the White House or Congress) have commented on matters outside their country.

Why is everyone of your posts something about conspiracy theories, politics, and a bit of random wierdness in between?

I'm no politician and none of these people are running the White House. Go write a formal complaint to someone in a position of power instead. This just looks like mental masturbation, like a child who found a new toy.

At least his rants were sometimes fun to read and somewhat intelligent.

To reply to some of my critics- who seem not to have been able to refute the observations I made about the US right and race and prefer ad hominem(that is to say personal) attacks, I have frequently travelled to the US(mainly to spend Thanksgiving with my cousins in Philly) and have on occasion( see my previous post "Hiroshima and Nagasaki- 67 years on"- August 6, 2102) defended it if I think it acted justly or correctly. They seem to think that any attitude to "The Land Of The Free and The Home Of The Brave" other than the most abjectly uncritical praise for every aspect of US life or politics is some form of unpardonable lese majeste(one is unhappily reminded of those leftists who attacked even the gentlest criticism of the USSR, Castro's Cuba, Mao's China during the Cold War period as "reactionary red baiting"). yes there IS much to admire about the US, but we do no good by failing to comment on the less than salubrious aspects of its politics, and given that the propensity of US spokesman and pundits to reproach other societies for their real and imagined faults, follies, and failures(pace my own country for its activities during the NI Troubles), Americans should not be surprised unduly if and when foreigners feel the desire to give Uncle Sam as good as he dishes out!

Terry

PS This is my final word in the matter!

I am only going to touch on one of your points and that's the segregation of black in the US. If you did some fact checking and not just listening to media or liberal teachers it was in fact the Democratic party that came to power shortly after the Civil War during the Reconstruction that inact the most famous segregation laws known as Jim Crow laws. So before you start bashing conservative and the "right" at least bash them for something they are responsible for. Also the Civil Rights movement would have ended before it began if it wasn't for Republican politicians because the majority of Democrats, with the exception of Pres. Kennedy and other Northern Dems, were strongly against Civil Rights.

I am not surprised your information is wrong, hell I've actually heard a talking head once proclaim Abraham Lincoln was the Democrat who freed the slaves.
