Okay so I know said in my last TCM review that I may or may not go back and review more TCM films. Well it looks I am.
Okay just let me start of by saying that I am pretty sure we do not actually get a shot of the table on the poster, would have been cool if that was actually the case but anyway.
The intro of the film basically starts with some flash backs to the original movie, this is used to try and convince us that this is somehow the "true sequel" to the original. I have some issues with the flashbacks themselves for one they put this black fog like effect around them I guess its trying to convince us that they are flashbacks, but all they actually do is obscure them. Guess they tried running those scenes somehow and the next issue I have which when I was sat watching it I had to pause and rewind just in case my eyes had not deceived me, I wish they had believe me.
They had replaced the actor for the Old Man originally played by Jim Siedow with Bill Mosley. Billy Mosely played Chop Top in TCM 2 (WHICH IS THE ACTUAL SEQUEL YOU FU!K HEADS!) any way. Now I don't have issues with them having another actor playing the Old Man but they took him out of the flashback scenes from the original film. I take issue with that. Because his performance in those films were my favourite I adore his character. See unlike the people making this I care about horror films I care about Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While these people just seem to be out to make money.
Okay so the start of the film we have ....uh right.....yeah uh no...uh. I will take my head out of my hands and continue typing now. Basically a mob of rednecks (?) find out about the sawyer family and come to their house and start shooting at them and whatnot. Whilst there is one police officer that is trying to stop them. And suddenly there are loads of random generic family members. So what are they all murdering cannibalistic backwater psychopaths? I mean they just look like random generic people. And Bill Mosely as the Old Man, he is just so...lifeless he is an average person. What? Why? I do blame the writing and directing not Bill, since he can clearly play loonies. So they made a full of life character played by an actor who can ply full of life characters into a dull boring, forgettable performance. And I just want you to look at the screenshot above and look at Grandpa (the one sitting down with the blue tie on) For one thing his face looks human when in the original he looked like some decrepit corpse, now I understand they not have been able to get the make up just right but they could have tried a bit more. But look at how he is holding the hammer, he is actually holding it for one thing, which in the original he could not do but he is lifting it up and holding it with some vitality.
And actually upon looking at a clear picture we can see how alive he looks which is wrong, but not only that he is sat in a chair not his wheelchair so he got up and walked about? Or maybe they carried him onto the chair but it still makes little sense, since now he is immobile. These may seem like little nitpick but people who are trying to make a sequel to the original and tie it in so closely, they need to respect and understand the original source material. Which they are clearly incapable of.
Oh look Gunnar Hansen is in it. A cameo this must mean its a good film.
So basically a baby is found, well taken from its mother who is one of the "Sawyers" And she is basically raised in by a couple who were in the angry mob. Basically she finds out she has inherited the Sawyer house. And her and her friends go on a bit of a trip to check out the house.
And eventually we manage to see Leatherface who is hiding in the wine cellar, does what he does and he kills a thieving hit hiker with a hammer. The kills in this film are really nothing special and really the kills are really the only thing to fall back on since the attempts to make any decent sense of horror or suspense are non existent.
The main character Heather that is her name I had to read the cast to actually get her name. Is given this letter basically telling her about Leatherface and how he lives in the cellar and just wants to be looked after and that he will protect her. Oh and uh he is her cousin. Yeah I just don't know what to say to that but put my head in my hands. And she never actually opens the bloody thing. Someone tells her later one. Just another case of characters been made to look illogical and idiotic due to lazy and crap writing.
The main plot or "plot" of the film is stupid, its poor, and utterly unneeded. Basically they went and got rid of the original sequel and tried to shoe horn this as the actual sequel. As I mentioned before in my other reviews I don't think the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a franchise it doesn't work that way since the original is such a unique piece of film it really left no room for one but when Tobe Hooper did make the second one he went in a completely different direction with it, and it worked. Not only that but he made the original in the first place so he has every right to make a another one has he sees fit. But not only do the makers of this piece of dead skin of a film not realize that but they also seriously jeopardize the original because by making it a direct sequel the original suffers for it.
My biggest issue with the plot is how we are made to feel that we need to take sides with Heather since the mayor is trying to kill Heather and Leatherface since he was part of the mob who killed the sawyers and he "wants to finish the job". And Heather suddenly befriends the guy who killed her friends. Who is wearing a face made of human flesh, who is obviously mentally ill and has the mind of a child and the strength of ten men. So this basically means the main protagonist is also mentally deranged I mean she doesn't seem to be, I mean anyone with half a brain who were in their right mind would not just start living with Leatherface. You see this is exactly the reason why a big family of them does not work and that the entire plot is totally devoid of any reason or well thought logic. And I honestly cannot take sides with the mayor since he is trying to kill her and seems to be fairly unhinged himself. So where does that leave us?
Well there is this one cop, or more specifically Sheriff Hooper who is sort of caught up in the middle about it all. Even then his actions are questionable since he lets Leatherface go. Really the film tries to make you feel bad for Leatherface and his family which is just a big mistake. I mean they were a family of backwater psychopathic sadistic cannibalistic murderers that is what they are. But they try to make them sympathetic by attempting to make an equally horrible bunch of people basically as bad as them. To sum it up the plot just defies all logic.
Oh and the 3D? Did not really notice any parts that could have been 3D apart from this one scene where Leatherface throw his chainsaw. Not that it would have made the film any better. Since 3D is a stupid fad that need to go away and die. Much like this film actually.
Leatherface himself in the film. I just did not like him he looks a bit crap and he was nothing special. maybe it had to do with the fact no atmosphere was attempted to be built around so he just felt boring and not frightening at all. There was also this scene where he runs out into a fair ground and is in public that really just reduced his scare factor from 1 to 0.
Overall this is a poorly made film with an incredibly illogical plot, it has no respect to the original source material, acting ranges from bad to just average, gore is okay. And there is no attempt to create any sort of atmosphere either. There is a kinda cool scene where Leatherface just cuts someone straight in half.
But this film is just another one of those films should never have being made. Its not even the fun bad its just the abysmal depressing kind of bad that makes you want to go and watch a better film.
Yeah stay away from this one.
Thanks for reading. Till next time I decide to do another review. Suggestions for what films I could review would also be helpful. And no I don't like romantic comedies so don't even ask.
