Teeny Weeny Eeny Blini

Say hi to the newest member of the Icarus family! This is Blini! (A blini is a buckwheat pancake, fun fact of the day).

Blini is cute and soft. She is also the most remarkably calm guinea pig I've ever seen. I accidentally fell asleep with her today. If I had done this with Onigiri she would have been either on my head or in my shirt within about ten seconds.

Yes, it was 4 pm, and I was still in my pajamas. Don't judge me.

I am a little worried about Blini though...she may not be in good health. I've been keeping an eye on her, but sometimes pet stores aren't super reliable about checking guinea pig health before they're sold. If you could send some prayers of health Blini's way, that would be much appreciated. Technically I should probably return her, but I grew irreparably attached about three minutes after I first saw her. So I'm just going to take care of her and hope for the best.

Just in case, she's going to be kept quarantined from Onigiri (my other guinea pig) for about two weeks.

Ah! She's so cute. She may be ill though? I know what you mean. When I bought Sega (my hedgehog) I made sure to get her from a breeder as pet stores usually don't check how healthy their pets are. I'm exactly the same way though. Once I hold an animal I grow instantly attached to it. Such a wonderful feeling.

@Samimista: I know I probably should get my piggies from a breeder, but I've never actually had issues with pet store pets before. : /

But its absolutely a good idea to get more exotic animals like hedgehogs from a breeder.

I'm glad you like Blini!!! :)

@shadowknight666: I know, right! :D

@Jonny_Anonymous: Awww. ^_^

@Referee: Hehe, thanks! :)

@The_Roman: :D

@lykopis: Awww, thank you!!!! ^_^

@White Mage: I woke up and my mom was shoving a camera in my face. I was more than a little confused. O_O

And thank you! :D

@Mercy_: Isn't she just precious? ^_^

@JediXMan: She's quite lethargic. It's hard for me to tell if this is due to illness, temperament, or just adjusting to a new environment. Usually if I get a baby they have an older guinea pig 'mentor' who helps them out, but I don't right now so Blini's adjusting a little more slowly. I'm trying to keep an eye on her and see what she's up to, so I can take her to the vet if I need to.

@Deranged Midget: :D

What do you think she is ill from?

Adorable! I'm sure she's healthy and strong but i'll send her my best wishes anyway, just to be safe ;)

Daaaaw she's so cute! Hope she is healthy and gets accommodated quickly.

#15 Posted by Icarusflies (11183 posts) - 4 months, 28 days ago - Show Bio

@YourNeighborhoodComicGeek: I dunno. Sometimes baby guinea pigs just pick up stuff while they're at the pet store. It's unfortunately not all that uncommon.

@Aiden Cross: Thank you very much!!!! (And your av is adorable btw!)

@Blood1991: Thank you kindly!!! :)

What's the point of naming a guinea pig? Will it learn to come when called?

So, it is a New Guinea pig?

#19 Posted by slacker the hacker (7615 posts) - 4 months, 27 days ago - Show Bio

Well ain't that neat.

#20 Posted by minigunman123 (3100 posts) - 4 months, 27 days ago - Show Bio

@satyrgod:Probably not, but you have to distinguish it somehow from the others, and you'd sound like an idiot if you called it "guineapig" forever.

"here's my guinea pig, guinea pig!"

"Wanna see guinea pig?"

"I love guinea pig!"

Sounds like a person who learned English as a second language.

Congrats, Icarus! Hope you love the thing, and hope it's healthy!

#21 Posted by Icarusflies (11183 posts) - 4 months, 27 days ago - Show Bio

@satyrgod: Well, firstly I name EVERYTHING (I named the capybaras at the zoo, even though I'm sure they have their own zoo-given names), secondly I have more than one guinea pig at any given time, and thirdly guinea pigs actually do learn their names and can come when called. And yeah, this is a baby.

@slacker the hacker: :)

@minigunman123: LOL, very good point.

And thank you!!!!

@minigunman123: "Probably not, but you have to distinguish it somehow from the others, and you'd sound like an idiot if you called it "guineapig" forever."

Consider:

"Here's my guinea pig!"

"Wanna see my guinea pig?"

"I love my guinea pig!"

Yeah, saying "I love my blini" sounds much better!

If some guy invited me over to see his "guinea pig" I'd be thinking along a somewhat different line."

Do you have any pets you don't name? Maybe he has taught guinea pigs to come. I've taught 2 geckos turtles to come when called by name sooo why not someone else with a guinea pig?

I don't know much about rodents, aside from lab experiments, so I asked. And, yes, I've had fish that I didn't name, because it seemed pointless and both disrespectful and presumptuous to name them in a human language. I have houseplants that I haven't named. They won't come when their called, either.

@Decept-O: Thank you! :D

@MonsterStomp: ....

@satyrgod: Why are you arguing over whether guinea pigs should be named or not? I already said that guinea pigs can be taught to recognize their names and come when called.

@god_spawn: I didn't know those could be taught, that's cool! :D

@Icarusflies: I'm not arguing, I said that I didn't know so I asked. Not a big deal.

Dear Jahveh, God of the Christians (and Jews, maybe, I don`t know who is the God of Jews, sorry) let Blini live a long guinea pig-life. Amen.

Is that good enough?
