Lovecraft no contest. Don't get me wrong, I love Stephen King's books, but they didn't invent the term Lovecraftian Horror for nothing.

Although I am very much a fan of both writers I find neither to be particularly scary.

King admittedly owes a debt to Lovecraft. Lovecraft clearly has a greater influence on popular culture.

But I am more moved by psychological horror, particularly the depths of human depravity and the concept of a vast and indifferent universe coupled with a nihilistic understanding of humanity's futility. Lovecraft never goes far enough in these concepts for me but he did basically get the ball rolling.

King on the other hand seems to leave a way out or at least postpones the inevitable with temporary reprieves.

Much bigger Lovecraft fan. I've never been able to make it through a Stephen King novel.

Call me a feeb, but I never got into the Lovecraft stuff never have never will. But, I give him credit for inspiring peeps.

So neither to be frank, but I guess King

Neither scare me while I'm reading their work. Pressed to chose I would say Lovecraft though. I love the stories where he only gives you enough detail to know the protaganist is about to be screwdover and then never bothers going into it. Can't recall the title of the one coming to mind but its about the census worker unknowingly coming across a canibal.
