Back in the 1990s and 2000s we had space operas like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and Babylon 5. Why don't we see space opera shows on TV anymore? Did the network execs decide the genre was dead? Did people lose interest in space travel? Why is this genre dead on TV? If the genre does not appeal to anyone anymore what can be done to revitalize the genre? What can be done to make the genre more relatable? Do you think this genre should be revived? Either way I think we need more epic space battles and political intrigue on TV. It was long thought that fantasy was a genre once thought reserved for geeks but Game of Thrones has garnered a huge audience. Perhaps a well written space opera with a huge budget could appeal to a diverse audience.
Space opera is dead!
BG didn't really end that long ago and prob would have kept going with better ratings. Star Trek I don't think really counts as Space Opera but its problem is that it just more or less ran its course and was beaten like a dead horse. Space Opera has never really been a popular theme for tv shows in general though. Its more for books and movies imo. Even Firely barely lasted as a tv show. I think if someone wrote a really popular series of space opera books it might get made into a GoT style tv show.
Any anime in space.
This guy gets it.
There's this.

Currently reading Leviathan Wakes and it is awesome! It is just like an action movie. And yes Saga needs to be a TV show or Movie!
Hopefully with movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, and the upcoming Star Wars movie we will see a resurgence in space opera. Don't forget about the Mass Effect movie.
