Do your remember that on nursery rhyme " humpty dumpty"?

"Humpty dumpty sat on a wall"

"Humpty dumpty had a great fall"

"and all the king's horses and all the king's men"

"couldn't put humpty dumpty back together again"

they never said humpty was an egg.

The same way the baby dies at the end of "Rock-a-bye baby" and everyone dies of a virus at the end of "Ring around the rosy."

The reason they say he is an egg is because its not as gory as if he was a human. Think about; he fell off a wall and splattered into pieces.

Ring around the rosy was supposedly a child's rhyme created during the time of the plague in the 1600's in England. Hence the "ring around the rosy" describing the sores/rash that would present itself, pocket full of posies were herbs in the hopes it would stave off the disease, ashes ashes was the cremating of the bodies or a tissue, a tissue for the sneezing and we all fall down for of course, dying. I know you are aware of this -- pretty interesting although it really has yet to be substantiated.

For me, there are a lot of horrific nursery rhymes. Like -- Jack cracked his head, lol and John, John Leprechaun was attacked and made naked by his schoolmates.

Sorry -- just rambling (as usual).

So he's just a guy with a really big egg-shaped head.

If they'd called him 'Eggy Weggy' it would've been such much easier.

@logy5000: It's not really as much the baby dies, but the entire nursery rhyme is about childbirth. (i.e. the baby falling out (cradle and all: placenta and all)) So really the baby is being born, not dying.

@dabee: It's falling from the tree in its cradle iirc.

Right, it is literally. But I believe it was meant to be allegorical. Or at least that's what the internet says.

@holyserpent: For kids, yes. The same way they changed "achoo" to "ashes" in ring around the rosy.

According to one source the first appearance of Humpty was in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glasswhere he is described as "resembling an egg".

Also, the nursery rhyme (which came later) was originally a riddle for which the answer was "an egg". I guess the question was something like "Who or what was HD?"

It's because he wasn't meant to be an egg. He was meant to be some jackass who thought it'd be a good idea to sit on a giant wall, and splattered all over the ground. Then people cannibalized him. They changed him into an egg to keep people from knowing the horrible, delicious truth.
