So I just got back from seeing Godzilla, which was my most anticipated film of the year, sadly, I felt it was lacking. The trailers fool you into thinking both Godzilla and Bryan Cranston would be major parts of the film, but sadly, they are not. Cranston's characters is gone pretty fast into the film and the main focus is on Cranston's son, played by Aaron Tyler Johnson, who is decent, but really as much of a generic military guys as you see in most action films. His wife is played by Elizabeth Olsen, and honestly, I liked her more than him, she seemed to show more emotional range.
Most of the film is the military explaining what Godzilla (and the two other M.U.T.Os) are and how to defeat them, we see a few cities being attack by the M.U.T.Os, but everytime Godzilla shows up, we don't see him actually do much. The major battle is the last 15 mins of the movie. Now, let me say, this battle is intense, and it will make old school Godzilla fans happy, but I wanted MORE!! The movie just scraps the two hour mark and we only see Godzilla prove he's the King of Monsters for 15 mins or so!
It was an okay film, the monsters looked great, Godzilla looked great, but I came in wanting to see him fight monsters, not having shocked marines running around trying to deal with the situation.
Ultimately, I'd give it 3 stars.
