I never trust anyone completely.
Take their advise: If they say you shouldn't trust them, they probably have reasons for that. They gain nothing by telling you to distrust them, so either they can't explain in full, or they're simply going off their experience with their own nature: They know that when push comes to shove, they're undependable, so they're giving you the forewarning not to rely on them so you're not left hanging when you really need it because you expected them to have your back.
Some people can't change their nature, but that doesn't mean they aren't aware of it.
