We keep hearing the government tell us that we have to make sacrifices due to the current economic state they say teachers and low level government employees should take a paycut and they support companies cutting workers pay when necessary and taking away a union's power but are they willing to reduce their own pay I mean it only seems fair that if they expect every one else to make sacrifices that they take some themselves
Should politicians take a paycut
Josh we think alike, I keep bringing that up to when I talk to my friends, why should they cut a dozen police officers, when they could take just take a pay cut in the higher up positions.
"I think we could force them to if enough people would get behind the idea "
~John F. Kennedy
" they get so much money from lobbyists and private interests groups anyway, a paycut really wouldn't mean anything other than they'd have to find other ways to cheat on their taxes. ;) "Or not pay them at all..as some politicians have been found to be doing. :P
It really wouldn't matter. Funding for things such as schools and public safety comes predominately from state and local government. Most state Legislators actually make very little. It is rarely their full time job. Instead, it is something that they do in addition to their normal job. For instance, the pay in Alabama is $10 a day. There are a few states, such as Illinois and Michigan that do pay legislators a real salary, but this is an exception to the norm. Most states pay between $5,000 and $15,000 a year I believe.
Federally, this would be more appropriate. Federal politicians make much more money that that. A cut in these salaries could be used to cut the deficit, but it wouldn't really help with education or public safety, with the exception of making more money available for grants.
It is difficult to adjust the pay of Congressional politicians. According to the 27th Amendment of the Constitution, the pay of Senators and Representatives cannot be adjusted until the start of a new term of service for Representatives. This was done to limit the ability of Congress to increase their salaries after their attempt to enact the Salary Grab Act in 1873, but it also prevents them from lowering their salaries as well. I suppose they could voluntarily decline a portion of their salary, but there would be no guarantee that this money would be used in a appropriate manner, so it is unlikely any Congressmen would do so.
Force them all to take a minimum wage job and serve a tour with a branch of the military, if they haven't already. Make them see how those who actually have to work and fight for a living have to make do.
