Oh man, I have hardcore love for both... I'll... just say Final Fantasy, probably because I played the first and so it impacted on me more. I have songs/tracks/tunes from both game series on my Ipod right now though lmao.
shin megami tensei: Persona games are better, but the overall better franchise is final fantasy, if it was just persona 3 and 4 and 3 portable, ATLUS would win.
Never tried Persona, have heard of, but overall Final Fantasy Tactics takes the cake for me. Then IX(favorite), VII of course, VI no doubt, followed by IV, I, II....and then 8.
Tough choice... Well the past decade goes to Shin Megami Tensei for me. Favorite Final Fantasy games (played) 4 ,6, 7, tactics, and 9. Favorite Shin Megami Tensei games (played) SMT 2(rip english translation), SMT: Persona 2 Innocent Sin(rip english translation), SMT 3, SMT: Persona 3 (all of it, except FES kinda stunk), and SMT: Persona 4 (the most light hearted of all of them). I like the SMT characters way more than any of the FF characters.
Final Fantasy VII is enough to make the choice obvious for me. So much Existential depth in that game; it's just wonderful.
That said, FF as a franchise is very hit or miss. IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII were all great. But then you have II, III, X-2, XIII which are really quite bad.
Still, I have to give it to FF, purely because I consider FF VII to be the greatest game of all time.

I loved that game! My fav of the Shin Megami games. I loved having Thor on my team!!!!! I have that game's intro screen music on my ipod lol Plus Demi Fiends tattoo's are so badass!

I'm all aesthetics. succubus' > Lilith disappointed me greatly. Nudie woman with a snake, come on.
SMT Brings far more imagination to it's titles than FF has... and FFXIII was unforgivable.

Nocturne has one of my fav. sountracks, i used listen to it constantly until my copy of the game was stolen and it became too sad to listen to. :( Anyway i can't really describe how much i love this game, the atmosphere, the music, the minimalistic graphics, the excellent fast-paced gameplay, the demons and fusing, everything. And it puts up quite a challenge on hard mode which is something all games in the FF series fail to do.

Oh and I forget the theme music from the Labyrinth of Amala, and its creepy cool wind chines it had going on. I love when video games try and get a bit diverse with their sounds. Oh, that really sucks man! Losing your copy. Too bad. I only just brought a PS3, but sooner or later it will probably be one of those games you can download or something? I agree about everything you said, it had a great atmosphere oh and I totally forgot about Dante's special guest appearance! Really loved the philosophical elements that they injected into the game, and quite a few games do this, but I felt this game was particularly good with what it did.
I guess Shin Megami is the winner! lol *smile*

My Femme of choice was Femme Yaksini. She knew how to move, and nude women with a snake, is so old testament, when Dravidian fertility goddess's is where its at =p
In terms of storyline and visuals, Final Fantasy. A lot of FF games have featured some of the most well written plots ever and it had some pretty superb graphics for its time.
Gameplay-wise and character-wise however, the battle system in SMT games are pretty unique and interesting and I found a lot of the characters in Persona to be absolutely wonderful.
Overall Final Fantasy is the superior franchise, but Shin Megami Tensei: Persona will always be my favorite. ;)
Being able to devour your enemies and turn into horrifying abominations; was weird and cool at the same time and it was the first time I'd ever come across something like that in a game period. The plot got a little iffy and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a fan of most things FF, but to me SMT always was about the strange and the unique which I find fun and interesting more often than not.
So while I'm a fanboy of both, my vote goes to SMT.
The only Shin Megami Tensei game I've played (and still playing) is Nocturne. Combining demons to make stronger demons was probably the best feature in the game. The game itself is pretty good, overall. It's just a little hard at times.
I've played SMT 1&2 and I love them both.SMT has a better atmosphere than FF. I don't like the European steampunk stuff. It's boring. SMT was also great because it had Social commentary (Is America a bully?)

If you enjoyed the demon combining in Nocturne you'd probably enjoy Personas 3 & 4 at the very least. The main character is capable of something similar with his Personas; and while I would point out that Persona has sort of a Japanese high school student sim deal going on, I found it surprisingly interesting and the concept behind Personas, the arcana (and it's correlation to the life journey), shadows, and even the looks into both human interpersonal relationships and the human psyche was interesting too.
I guess all that babbling adds up to I think you should give them a try Static, SMT is a great bunch of games and while they aren't all connected and even branch off into different franchises, they're almost always top notch at characters, themes, and story creation.

Yes Persona 3: FES is on PSN. :) I doubt Persona 4 will make it to PSN any time soon considering the PS Vita version, but I'm really itching for Persona 5. :3

Oh P3P was amazing. My first Persona game. xD Though yes it is likely they might make Persona 4 available on PSN after Arena. AND YES Persona on the PlayStation 3 needs to happen soon. Get to it Atlus! xD
