I suppose it had to happen- the "red state"(ie Republican dominated) state of Nebraska today voted overwhelmingly to override the veto of its governor Pete Ricketts (GOP) and repeal theState's death penalty, replacing it with life without the possibility of parole, pardon or commutation. Given that Nebraska hasn't executed anybody since 1997 and anyway hasn't the drugs needed for execution by lethal injection, this may be a formality, but the number of state governments enforcing capital punishment(still in force for the US federal government and US military ) is going into a slow decline.
Given that in my own country(UK), capital punishment has been abolished since 1965(the last execution took place in 1964) and even the NI "Troubles" hasn not caused the return of the gallows, I am inclined to wonder and ask out translatlantic cousins across the pond- "What kept you?"
Anybody think as I do?
Terry
