I think you mean psychology.  Psychiatry is very much a hard science and part of medical science.  Psychology itself is becoming relatively hard as well.  Of the social sciences it is probably the hardest next to geography.

QFT Take it from someone who studied alittle of it at uni. Psychology is a solid science also and its heavily used tool in the judicial system.

Err, I cant watch it, not on this computer.  I assume its the usual complaints about it, in which case its ridiculous.

think of it this way, there are thousands of people who don't believe in evolution, but when they go into a doctor's office they get drugs which if there was not a firm understanding of the theory of evolution, would not exist.

Maybe the questiosn about the authenticity of science should be left to scientists?

@RazzaTazz: It's regarding psychiatrists using whims and fancy as a means of placing their roles in society, basically that everyone has some form of mental illness from what I gather. I had to stop it when it got boring. I may have ADD.
Edit: They've always seemed like walking advertisements for major drug companies to me, anyway. I remember when a teacher asked me if I considered taking medication for my "condition," and I told him I wouldn't want to take drugs to feel accepted or normal because I already am.

Psychiatrists have to have been through at least 4 years of school and 2 years of interning before even calling themselves a psychiatrist.  There might be a few who get through the system who are less reputable, but if you ever have a severe brain injury (lets hope not) it would be a psychiatrist, psychologist or neuroscientist that you would be able to thank for any day-to-day functions you got back.

Psychology is a soft science. It is a SOCIAL science. Some facets of psychology such as Behaviourism is based on scientific principles. Psychiatry is more scientific than mere psychology because psychiatry today deals with body chemistry, neurological dysfunctions, and medications.

I couldn't agree more.

Nothing is concrete and if it doesn't get results the psychiatrist can blame it on an unknown factor.

It's bunk.

@PowerHerc: Which defeats the purpose of individual case studies. My friend died because of the medicine an institution forced him to take because of their I don't knows and let's try these.

I'm sorry to here that.

I obviously didn't know your friend but I'm still sure he deserved better treatment and more respect than being used as an experiment by those quacks and charlatans.

It's all right. It happened seven years ago while I was in Tennessee. He was a good person and I wish they had better staff.
