President Obama ate a dog! Who does that!?

The infamous tale of Mr Romney's Irish setter Seamus - who travelled in a crate atop the family's station wagon on a 1983 trip from Boston to Canada - has dogged the former Massachusetts governor for years. The story has caused outrage from animal rights groups and been used by opponents to paint Mr Romney as heartless and tone-deaf. Mr Romney and his wife Ann were most recently asked about the incident during an interview on Monday with US ABC's Diane Sawyer, but Mrs Romney's defence that Seamus "loved" traveling on top of the family car drew snickers from Democrats and dog lovers.

Biting back on Tuesday, conservative news site The Daily Caller made note of a passage in Mr Obama's book "Dreams from My Father," in which the president recounted some of his adventurous eats while living in Indonesia with his stepfather Lolo Soetoro from age six to 10.

"With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chili peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy)," part of the passage reads.

Daily Caller blogger Jim Treacher commented, "Say what you want about Romney, but at least he only put a dog on the roof of his car, not the roof of his mouth."

Obviously people who live in countries that eat dogs well... eat dogs. Each country has its own foods and holds different animals on different pedestals. Americans eat cows while some Indian cultures hold them as holy creatures. At least Obama was willing to try the food and wasn't insensitive about their customs. I don't see what the big deal is really.

...so? All meat comes from what was once a living, breathing creature. There are far worse things you can do to an animal than kill and eat it.

Who cares? Different cultures, different morals.

It irritates me that this qualifies as news. It's been common in Eastern cultures to eat dogs and cats for awhile now.

In America we eat cows, exterminate rats and use monkeys to test make-up. In India cows, rats and monkeys are all sacred creatures. So why is it ok to eat animal that is sacred to millions but it isn't ok to eat something many people have put down because they had to move while paradoxically referring to them as our best freinds

There are a plethora of more pressing matters to be worrying about than what Obama decided to consume one day.

Obama is a big celebrity you should not say such words about him.

I love that I live in a country where the President and the candidate for the White House are reduced to saying "you took poor care of your dog once" and "oh yeah? well, you ate a dog!"

 I ate a Jack Russle with some fava beans and a nice chianti

I myself am partial to Jack Russel and chips or sometimes Poodle kebabs.

Okay, not the the thread, but that anyone has ever thought of this as a "bad" thing.

My sister ate a dog to when she was in Vietnam on vacation from her job in Thailand. As a funny side note she also takes care of stray dogs outside of her apartment lol. I feel there is a difference between eating a commonly eaten animal in the region you are and treating a dog badly where they are beloved pets. It really doesn't matter either way to me to be honest. I love animals but that's not going to stop me from feeding on their yummy yummy flesh. I'll try most things once, if I was in a country that ate dogs I totally would because I am oddly curious about what different animals taste like lol.

  Seriously. People eat dogs all the time. It's not a big deal.  Is it because dogs are smart that you think they shouldn't be eaten? Pigs are just about as smart as dogs are. Pigs get eaten all the time and nobody gives a hoot (except Jewish people).  Is it because people have dogs as pets? A lot of people have pet chickens, pet birds, pet fish... and all of those animals are very commonly eaten.  I really don't get what your deal is about this.

my personal view is the most natural one, we invented the pointy stick therefore we get to eat whatever the hell we want. Our ancestors earned our spot on the food chain and I'm damn well gonna enjoy it. Tho I'd prefer we avoided eating the endangered ones, as for the rest, if they want us to stop eating them they better damn well get smarter like we did when we decided we'd had enough of being bear food. Survival of the fittest isn't a slogan, it's the law of the jungle(literally)

Also what do you care about what he eats, I wouldn't care if the president feasted on the I can haz cheeseburger cat, in the oval office, while wearing parachute pants as long as he was strong on the issues that I support, and was a good president. Then again I'm not an american citizen so perhaps my opinion on the matter is void. But from the outside anyway, it seems that Obama is doing a pretty good job.

I don't think either thing is that big a deal though. Dogs are animals just like anything else we eat and kill.

But is it equally wrong to eat dog as a child in a country where it is part of the culture, or strap your family pet to the roof and drive 65 down the interstate for hours?
