Lawmakers in Oklahoma are proposing a law that will make it illegal to wear a hoodie or any other article of clothing that will conceal someone's identity in public. Including robes, masks, or any other disguise in public. Anyone caught wearing a hoodie or disguise in public will be subjected to a $500 fine or up to a year in jail.

A lot of places have similar rules. It is to make it easier to make arrests during riots and social unrest. In this case seeing as it is Oklahoma, probably more of a reaction against what is happening elsewhere in the country.

They have laws like that in the UK. It's dumb, but it will sadly pass.

That's really stupid, but that's the kind of stuff you get when you accept the false premise that you should trade your rights in exchange for security.

At best, you could probably only pass this law for parks. You can't tell someone what to wear in public, that's why the KKK can have a parade in NYC every year.

This law would fail in court.

@silkyballfro94: you and I both know who this law is targeted towards. It's not scarf wearers...think of people a little...not white.

@superguy1591: Yeah I was just trying to make a point. But using the logic these legislators are using, scarves could be banned too.

We all know what Franklin said about that.

I'm interested in seeing this challenged in court. I don't see it holding up, tbh.

@risingbean:

As stupid as this law is, I don't know that this law would be against the U. S. Constitution. It might be against the state Constitution. Even if it was unconstitutional, it's not like there is any guarantee the Courts would do their job and uphold the Constitution. The second, forth, ninth and tenth amendments are all essentially dead and buried, and the separation of powers isn't all that separate any longer.

Halloween is already a lost cause, schools in my area already say, no props of any sort, no masks, no realistic looking violence, etc. Society never fails to impress me, o wait yes it does, all the time!

So . . . Who has actually read the article?

The law does makes exemptions for people wearing hoodies for religious purposes, Halloween, medical purposes, or “protection from the weather,” there’s really no way to determine why someone is wearing a hoodie until long after they’ve been harassed.
