Places to see and things to do in New Orleans?

So I'm looking online for places to go to visit in New Orleans for my 21st birthday, but I'd like to here from you guys as well. What are some must see places in New Orleans?

Things I expect to get out of my visit.

• Meet new people
• Experience a different culture
• See some historical buildings
• Museums
• beautiful landscapes/nature/etc...

The World War Two museum is a must see, so is Bourbon Street, the Zoo, the mall, and arguably the best restaurant in the city: Acme Oyster House. Also try the Cathedral, Jackson Square, and the French quarter but steer clear of the ninth ward and st. Roch street at night.

Go to the aquarium and schedule a visit to play with the penquins. Go to a concert.

I'm planning on going on a road trip with my friend to N.O so I'll be keeping my eye out to see what people recommend.

@ccraft: I actually live a few hours away in Shreveport but I've been to New Orleans more times than I can count. St. Roch and the ninth ward are notoriously bad neighborhoods with extremely high levels of crime. St. Roch street is infamous for tourist beatings by large groups of attackers. Last year alone over four tourists a night were sent to the hospital due to beatings.

@judasnixon: Well looks like later than sooner, my mom wants me to see her on my b-day, so I guess I'll drive up there instead. My dad said we could go by Washington DC on our way back, should be interesting. It would be funner to visit NO with friends than family, so I'll wait.

That's so cool! At the very least, we need hula boys where I live. Gotta love a guy who isn't afraid to rock that look for giggles...

Since I lived a hour away from New Orleans, I recommend Acme Oyster House, French Quarter, Bourbon Street, and the WW2 Museum. Mardi Gras is also a great example for partying and having good times.
