There's a reason it's referred to as "the birds and the bees." Seriously, what was he expecting? That they'd build little hotels so they could be discreet about it?

@umbrafeline: I think the more extreme end of things was what surprised him. Maybe not the same sex relationships, but the consideration of things like rape (though you'd think that one wouldn't expect human behavior or rational from animals). But then again, said polar explorer was from a very different culture, and sexual repression has sort of been a rather long lasting theme in the western world as a whole.
But I can honesty say that I didn't know about the necrophilia and it's strange and surprising when you think about it from a more anthropomorphic standpoint. Though putting that aside, I realize it's probably not that big of a deal, though still undeniably weird to my sensibilities.
