TODAY, the largest sporting event the world has ever seen will kick off.  That's right, the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

You can use this thread to discuss the athletes, the competition, the politics, and much more.  Feel free to show some pride (but let's keep it positive) for your country.  The summer games only come along once every four years.  It's time for records to be made, dreams to be fulfilled, and people to come together as one.

I hope so.  Back in Athens, they had alot of good people who could drive the ball, but not enough people who could shoot far out.

Yeah man.  That dude is awesome.  Physically, professionals say he's got a natural body of a swimmer - long torso, short legs.

I think Dara Torres is going to do extremely well.  It's unfortunate about her coach not being able to be there because of his condition.  However, she'll pull through and take the gold.

What's amazing is that when people said she was PAST her prime, she came back and CRUSHED her old records.

Wow......the opening ceremony was AMAZING.  From what I observed, track & field and judo were the top two types of competitors to carry the flags for their nations.  I also thought it was a nice touch on China's part to have the little nine year-old walk next to the mighty Yao Ming.  Overall, the excitement, the intensity, and the sheer awe of the games came through the screen.  When that Olympic flag was raised, it was incredible.  Hopefully, this event will bring nations together like never before.  It was incredible.

On a side note, it's kind of sad that they're considering removing baseball and softball as an Olympic sport.  Once again, I hope Dara Torres does an outstanding job.  She's got what it takes to lead the U.S. Women's Swim Team to victory.  Michael Phelps is going to do the same for the men's division.  I truly hope that he achieves his dream by winning more gold medals than any Olympian in history.

Go USA!!! (and Greece)

Michael Phelps did an amazing job today - 1st place in the 400m.

Also, I was particularly impressed with women's fencing.  The fact that the USA took first, second, AND third place was just incredible.  Considering that it was in the Sabre division made it even more impressive.  There was a time when women were only allowed to compete using the foil.  This shows how far the sport has developed and given women more freedom.  It's incredible.  I think that in this Olympics, women have a such an awesome role.  With the USA clearing the comptetion in the Sabre division, Darra Torres competing, the unstoppable beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, and many others, we are looking at a phenomenal display of the power of women.

On another note, seeing the USA face off against China in basketball is going to be awesome.  Lebron James on one side and Yao Ming on the other - you won't want to miss it.

Anyone else have any comments/input about the games?

I was thinking of America (don't know how I confused them both), China have 4 gold, they have 2. Both have 2 silvers.

I just checked on the Olympics website and it says that USA's currently 1st with China being 2nd and Korea being 3rd.
