Adam Driver is ready to travel to a galaxy far, far, away.

Sources tell Variety that while no deal is done yet, the “Girls” actor is close to signing on to play the villain in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Exact details are unknown, but the character is said to be in the vein of iconic “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader.

Driver, 30, is the first cast member to be revealed for Walt Disney Studios and LucasFilm’s highly-anticipated “Star Wars” installment, which will open in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.

The big-budget tentpole, directed by J.J. Abrams, is scheduled to shoot at London’s Pinewood Studios in April. Additional cast members will likely be announced in the next month.

Well it says "In the vein" so I'm guessing that means a role that's similar to Vader.

no hes going to play a similar villain ( sith i believe) like darth vader. im starting to wonder if this will be darth malgus since he is the closest thing to resemble him. i know hes from the old republic but i wouldnt mind disney kind of borrowing charachters from that to introduce into the new trilogy

as would i but we all know a sith will be used and if they had to pick one malgus would be a nice addition really expecially since jj uses original prostetic makeup wich is a huge plus in my book. besides if there is one thing star wars is known for its the lightsaber fights

Remember Adam Driver was meant to be Synder's choice for Lex Luthor now he's a Star Wars villain.

The ones that came out before the prequels are phenomenal films. The prequels that came out in the 2000's are just okay.

@buttersdaman000:

The Thrawn trilogy literally re-sparked the interest in Star Wars in the 90's.

Everything about Thrawn is awesome; he's a strategic mastermind and a very eccentric and esoteric figure (two things I love in characters).

We never get to know what excatly Thrawns thinking, because we never actually see things from his perspective.

I suggest you read the Thrawn trilogy, you won't be disapointed.

He was a strategic master-mind that nearly defeated the New Republic.

What makes you think he was Force-Sensitive ?

On a weird side note, why would they call it Force-Sensitive ? I mean technically my d!ck is Force-Sensitive... maybe it has TK and Lightning powers too.

Wish he had a Light Saber though... then he could cut people's heads off as well as use strategic moves.

He's not a fighter - he is a strategist.

I think that would be interesting. It would be unique to the Star Wars movies: a purely intellectual enemy who manipulates everyone (in a different way than Palpatine, I mean).

There were several moments in the Thrawn Trilogy where I thought "there's no way he could know that... unless the Force helped him."

I always thought Star Wars needed an enemy that could fight... they had some skills with the Light Saber among other things. I mean I guess they could take it in a different direction... but I would miss the fights with the Glowing Sticks of Light.

They don't have informants and moles in Star Wars who can get inside information for higher authorities ?

Thrawn manipulates a Dark Jedi to help him, who attempts to turn Luke to the dark side.

... there's also the stupid Luke clone, which I don't want to talk about. That should be ignored...

Also, there's Mara Jade, who gets roped into the whole thing. Heir to the Empire takes place on Myrkr, which is full of Ysalamiri - lizards who suppress the power of the Force. So for the most part, Jedi are powerless on that planet.

Hmmmm... but how would a Jedi be manipulated by someone who lacks Force powers ? Don't Jedi's have Mind Trick Powers themselves ?

Lizards that can suppress the power of the Force.... now that sounds interesting.

Thrawn carries a Ysalamiri around on his shoulders, which prevents the Force from effecting him.

Here is how his meeting with that Dark Jedi, Joruus C'Baoth, went:

Nope. Relatively small - there's just a lot of them. About 2 feet, ish.

They adapted this way as a survival mechanism to protect themselves from beasts, like the Vornskr - wolf-like animals that hunt by using the Force to stalk their prey. If their prey is also strong in the Force, it makes the more ferocious (they are good Jedi hunters).

Decades later, during the Yuuzhan Vong war (which I want to see in the movies), the Vong created the Voxyn predators to hunt and kill Jedi. They were creations based on the manipulated genes of Vornskr (combined with an animal of Vong origin) to make them more powerful.

The moral of this story is: the Star Wars EU is awesome.

Wedge lived through both Death Star battles.

He is a star in the famed X-Wing novel series and was the leader of Rogue Squadron. He went on to have a very productive life in the EU.
