Actually now that I think about it, I think I remember hearing something about the writers of the show changing as soon as the movie was done, that could be bullcrap I've imagined though. Can anyone confirm if this is what happened and if there was any reason behind the change in writers, if they did indeed change then?

Also correct. The dude who created the show was inspired by shows like (and I think worked on) Rocko's Modern Life which was full of the same style humor Spongebob had. He transferred to an other position and left the creative process. And I think after that the network took over and demanded something that has a bigger appeal to kids.
I kinda feel like he suffers from what most do when they get too popular, people start hating on him. I will admit...I've seen some newer episodes, and it's not as funny as the old ones (like the gems, Rock Bottom, Spongebob kills the Health Inspector, and Tea in the Treedome) but they aren't /that/ bad.

I try not to be a hipster at all cost and never hate something because its popular, but yes modern Spongebob is really that freaking bad.

I do think that they have dumbed him down..or at least, made it less clever to pander to the Nickelodeon audiences (young children) But some episodes after the movie still made me laugh, like when the lost Gary or SB lost his memory. My favorite episodes are indeed the old ones, but I'm not hatin' the new ones (plus, they burst out into songs in the old ones too, like Band Geeks, ripped pants, the Indoors song, etc)

A broken clock is still right twice a day, I'm not saying that they probably still don't have some funny jokes (I wouldn't know since I don't watch it anymore) but it's less consistent then it was before. I'm also not constantly hating it cus I just quit cold turkey, I just look for other cartoons to fill that hole. I'm not exaggerating that when I say that Spongebob in it's prime was one of the funniest cartoons growing up IMO.
Also yes, you're right. They did break into song, but when they broke into song it was for comedic purposes. Best Day Ever was just meant to be catchy.
