Agreed, the American Revolution was not the setting I was hoping for. I'm wondering how they're going to do all the climbing sequences and such, because architecture in the US at the time was nothing like what was see in Europe. I don't think there are very tall buildings, period?
But the setting could be fun.
PS: What setting was everyone else hoping for? I was wanting either 16th century - 1588 Spanish Armada's run on England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the French Revolution in 1789, or possibly the American Civil War (with submarines!!)
So disappointing but surprising.
I'm massively excited for this setting. It is constantly down-played and almost never used. It's probably the most perfect setting for conspiracy and I'm especially happy that the focus isn't completely on Desmond.
@Izaiah: Ancient Egypt would've been SO AWESOME. omg now I'm upset it didn't turn out to be that. I didn't even think it was a possibility, because I thought they were going forward in time. Arthurian Britain could've been cool, but again I'd wonder how they'd do the free-running/parkour sort of stuff... It's not like there were a bunch of castles and stuff during that time, it was mostly just small wooden forts and settlements. Well, that's if they're meaning the most realistic era of 600AD-700AD as "Arthurian Britain", rather than the romanticised era of around 1000AD. But even then there wasn't a lot of architecture, like in Rome, Athens, Damascas, Cairo, etc And not that they couldn't do an AC without big architecture, it's just that's become one of the big features of the games, you know?
@spiderbat87: This would've neat to see. They could still hypothetically do it, since Ubisoft has said a number of times that the story in AC goes beyond Desmond/Altair/Ezio/etc, and that the games have always been more about the assassins vs the templars. So if (when, lbr) they do an AC4, if they keep going forward in time, Victorian England seems a realistic era. Even cooler would be if they set it in the years leading up to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 and ending it just as World War I starts... omg, that would amazing. Especially since it's not unusual for the games to span a number of years. It could start around 1871, when Wilhelm I is proclaimed Emperor of Germany and the German Empire begun, and take place in Paris, Berlin, Istanbul, London, and ending in Sarajevo. Going over all the politics of the imperialistic forces of Europe at the time and how it all led up to the war, with of course their assassins vs templar spin to it.
I love this idea!! I really want to know what the characters name will be as Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad means "The Eagle, son of no one" and Ezio Auditore da Firenze means "The Eagle, he who dares, of Florence"@spiderbat87: This would've neat to see. This sounds like fun. Only thing I'm worried about is how they'll do the acrobatic aspect of it. To my knowledge, colonial American towns were very small compared to the settings of the last games. The buildings in them also aren't very large(the largest being a clock tower or a cathedral maybe), so I don't know how they'll pull that off. Here's to hoping it turns out well.
I'm with you on thatI'm massively excited for this setting. It is constantly down-played and almost never used. It's probably the most perfect setting for conspiracy and I'm especially happy that the focus isn't completely on Desmond.
@spiderbat87: Actually Auditore just means "listener" (with the same root as "audio", or meaning sound), and it refers to his dad's job as an, well, Auditor (banker). lol
But I can see them going with another name that means Eagle. If the main character is going to be Native American as he's rumored to be, it depends on which tribe he belongs to... some of those names are quite a mouthful! Though there are a few options, like Beshkno (Potawatomi), Kwahu (Hopi), Migisi (Chippewa), Peta (Black Foot), Tuari (Laguna and Hokan - sounds almost Elvish lol), Wamblee (Sioux), Wohali (Cherokee)... or if they choose to go with a mixed heritage, or not Native American at all, Aras (Lithuanian), Ari/Arne (Scandinavian). I'm honestly really wondering the same thing about where they'll go with the name. Hell, they may not even go with the "eagle" meaning period. I mean, Desmond Miles is just a name they chose randomly, with no real meaning behind it, so they could do the same with the new guy and just pick something cool and appropriate for the region and era.
@spiderbat87:
lolol yup!
It's more like an elaboration/fancifying, to make the meaning more appealing. Which is the same reason you shouldn't trust any baby name books if you ever have children! Almost NONE of them have the correct etymology for the names they list! It's pretty hilarious, and also a little bit sad. Thinking of all the mom's showing off their little Gisele's saying "it means gazelle!" when it actually means "hostage" does amuse me though lol
Thought I'd add the link to GB's article on it concerning the actual Ubisoft announcement.
Hmm I wonder what Shaun means, as thats my name.@spiderbat87:

@spiderbat87:
http://www.behindthename.com/ is an actual etymological site for names, with accurate meanings and histories, if you're interested in that sort of thing (I'm a language nerd, especially concerning etymologies, especially etymologies of names lmao).
It says Shawn (anglicized form of Sean), is the Irish form of John, which is the English form of Iohannes, which is the Latin form of Ioannes, which is the Greek form of the original Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning "Yahweh (God) is Gracious". So there you go! lol!

According to that mine is Welsh, and my parents thought it was Hebrew. Is it just me, or do a lot of male names seem to come the name John in one way or another?
Having mixed feelings. Assassins creed is one of my favorite series ever. I trust Ubisoft to know what they're doing. I'm just afraid of the setting. Will there be too much gun fire? I loved the feel of Assassins Creed where people had swords and whatnot. I know the guns are crappy back then, but.... idk just being picky I suppose. I was expecting France or China.

I trust Ubisoft to pull off flintlocks and muskets well. They've done pretty solid gunplay before with the Tom Clancy games. The system will need re-working to fit AC more, but I think they could pull it off without ruining the game's feel too much.
As long as I can get into the story with a good main character, good setting, and a nice battle system, I'll be fine. I wonder how the mercantile system will work, as well as the armor system. So many things seem to come into question with this setting: Will we witness the signing fo the Declaration of Independence. Will we meet any of the founding fathers(we better -_-.)@OblivionKnight said:

We probably will get to see both, and I'm willing to bet the new assassin will play a part in the signing, if not the entire revolution.
I could definitely see the bolded part happening. I'm sure the new character being part Native American will play a significant part in and of itself, given how much of a factor the Native Americans were. I'm sure it will cause some conflict for him( the main character.)@OblivionKnight said:

@Izaiah: Oh yeah, forgot about that.
Even though it's confirmed he's Native American, it's rumored he might only be part. So if he's part American/European as well, it could indeed provide a bit of interesting conflict.
Oh comeon people this will be boss! Of course..I'm biased because Im a history freak.

This would have been nice too if it had been the real thing...
So is this going to be set in the american revolution or the Indian wars?
You finally get a bow. I'm interested.

Like the French Revolution? Huh, didn't even think of that one..
@ZombieBigfoot: Oh That sounds cool, Doesn't explain the indian stuff.

Native Americans were around during that time. In fact, a lot of Colonies were heavily inflicted with Indian problems because of the proximity to them. Fending off Indian raids was a regular thing in some colonies.
@ZombieBigfoot:
It's not an unusual thing in naming for different cultures with different languages to "translate" a name to make it look more normal within their language/culture. It's especially common with "popular" names - John, Edward, Elizabeth, Paul, Anne, etc
Hell, that happens within languages with just words in general lol.
eta: Also, is it perhaps that your name is a Welsh version of a Hebrew name?

I know, just a common trend I've noticed with a lot of name translations that end up at John.
Edit: "Anglicized form of Iefan, a Welsh form of JOHN." That's what it said for the meaning/history, but there's a whole list of the name for different languages.
I want the Russian Revolution! Murdering the Tsar would be the most awesome thing ever.
Really dumb decision by Ubisoft, though. You'll appeal to US audiences, certainly, but what about your worldwide market?
If anyone wants more info, here's a link to IGN's article with a video going into further detail.

You can write a letter to their HQ about extending the game so 2-3 fillers can take place again and you can get Assassin's Creed Crocodile Hunter. :P

Both AC 1 and 2 were based in foreign settings and were massively successful and widely accepted. Don't see a problem with the new setting.
