I don't think it was actually laziness, he just had a surge of ideas on the original series then when Shippuden came around he really had no ideas on how to tie them in with the akatsuki. With the exception of how Hidan was taken care of none of the original side characters had any involvement since then (besides Hinata getting her ass kicked by Nagato). New characters that had to be addressed (particularly ninjas from the other villages) also took a lot of attention away from naruto's friends. Whenever I see characters like Iruka or Kiba they are so ridiculously gimped that it is laughable. Even badasses like Kakashi and Gaara or pretty irrelevant to the main arcs now.

@dngn4774: Exactly. Like Dragon Ball. When I said lazy I meant that stories with big monster enemies. They are easy to write, when you think about it. The trick is to make it as long as possible, and there you go. Instead of writing a god-know-how-long story about the tailed beasts he could have written about the ninjas doing, you know, ninja-missions. After all, they need to get bread on the table somehow.
