Title says it all.

No Caption Provided

Seirei no Moribito. Based on the japanese novel by Nahoko Uehashi, this anime combines interesting characters, a well written, acted and paced plot, great uses of music, action and tone and a well handled ending that gives bot a great sense of finality and leaves the door open for a possible season two. If there is an anime out there not written by Hayao Miyazaki that @saren would enjoy, this is it.

As crazy as it seems, I don't think he'll like any even if it's good.

@leo-343: Though how anyone could dislike Bebop, I have no idea.

I really think, based on his popular rant about why he dislikes anime, he would hate one piece. I havent seen Hellsing or Monster, though...I also don't think Deathnote would be to his liking-- I enjoyed it, though.

I still haven't seen Akira. The fear is that it has been hyped so much, that it will fall short of my expectations. I did however, see the first Ghost in the Shell. Fantastic movie. I almost never buy anime but with that one, I made an exception. I understand the series continued on after the movie. I never checked that out myself, is it good?

@saren: Really? Akira? I couldn't stand the anime but the book was great. IT looked really pretty but I think they just stuffed too much into the movie. Especially considering the book is, what, 2000 pages?

I fully agree that Ghost in the Shell is great.

I really think you'd enjoy the anime in the OP. Give it one episode.

@makhai: My opinion of Akira is that the book is great but the anime just had way too much stuffed inside. It can be disorienting (it was for me) if you're not already familiar with the story. Other than that it is one of the best looking animated things I've ever seen, the music is great and the world building is amazing.

EDIT:

YES. GO WATCH THE SERIES!!!

Does Grave of the Fireflies count as an anime? If so that. I usually hate most anime, but loved that movie.

This is like a backhanded compliment...

You could literally swap out that statement with numerous interchangeable phrases that end up being insults.

The movie will have to do. I don't read Japanese publications. I read Suematsu Kencho's translation of The Tale of Genji for its historical significance, but aside from that I hide Japanese books when I spot them at public libraries.

The series in the OP seems like one of those medieval settings, which completely flood most mainstream anime, and they're really not my thing. The only anime I've watched and liked were sci-fi or cyberpunk series like Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Arjuna. I'm not really into historical settings or fantasy stuff. It's just never appealed to me. I only started getting into Game of Thrones because of Charles Dance, and now that he's gone I feel like I'm just hanging around because Emilia Clarke is nice to look at. LOTR and the like usually bore me.

I liked Stand Alone Complex. The series is one of my favorites because too many anime ventures into science-fiction start mixing mysticism and spirituality into the narrative for no reason, like Arjuna's whole Earth Warrior thing (even though I liked that series as well). GitS just focused on the technology and the issues surrounding technology.

@saren: Ever considered it? You might like it, it's a bit more heavy in the "western" department, but it does have heavy sci-fi/cyberpunk themes and connections. The influence of a person's past is also a strong topic through the series.

I too completely and throughly HATE almost all anime.... almost all anime.

I hate anime that the entire plot line of every arc/season is them getting more destructive. If you look at season 1 and the last season and they have geometrically increased in power, I will never watch it.

However, I love more grounded and realistic anime, or anime that is consistent in its power levels.

Ex. I HATE Naruto, Dragon Ball, and the like but I loved Golgo 13, and more than likely I would love Cowboy Bebop.

Maybe he would like Golgo 13 as well.

As for something Saren wouldn't hate, how about Cowboy Bebop?

Wow, a guy makes a seething assessment about anime an a few comically sarcastic posts about it, now it seems like all the anime fans constantly vie for his attention.

edit: Just so I'm not being that guy who doesn't contribute to the actual thread topic, I'll say . . . Angel's Egg
