Hey guys so I saw that this was successful for Joygirl and I'm kinda behind on my music listening anyone have any good things I should be listening to?

What I like

1) Rap, mainly underground, conscious, old school and freestyles (I.e Jay Electronica, Nas, MF Doom, Childish Gambino ect.)

2) Jazz (Mainly bebop, Coltrane is my favorite musician)

3) Indie rock (Minus the Bear, Braid ect anything with strange time signatures and a good bassline)

4) J-Rock

Anyone got anything for me?

Have you listened to !MAYDAY! from Strange Music?

Have you listened to Hopsin or Dizzy Wright from Funk Volume?

Have you listened to Logic from... I forget what he's calling his team... but yea... have you?

Have you heard of Irv the Phenom?

Please tell me you listened to Tito Lopez who is signed to Aftermath and probably will be shelved like Bishop Lamont and Stat Quo were.

I'll come back when I can think of more.

I'm going to assume you're caught up with rap. I've seen your previous posts about rap.

I got nothing.

@nelomaxwell: I don't really listen to rap so I'm gonna take a total stab in the dark and try this, since it does have hip-hop elements and you likely won't have heard of it, maybe I can add a li'l "Joy" to your repertoire... nyahaha... NYAHAHAHAH.

@nelomaxwell: Well yeah, I wouldn't recommend it if it was something familiar. :P

Mm, definitely. Check out his debut 'The Preface' though - I find it a much more solid album, and he's got some great tracks on there (Guessing Game, Motown 25, DEMONS).

I haven't when I say I'm behind, I'm behind G.

I think you'll like Dizzy Wright. I say go on youtube and check out Dizzy Wright's "Flavor."

I'll post some videos some other day so you can check em out and it's cool to be out of the loop. I'm fairly out of the loop. I mean I used to be totally in it like, I new months and weeks ahead of what my friends would be talking about now they mostly get to teach me. I think they're loving it right now. I haven't said, "Yeah, I know", or "Yeah, I heard *insert topic* since last *insert day*."

Everytime we meet up they always want to show me something. Before, they totally were hesitant to share anything. I find it funny.

But chea! I'll get some videos and post them here later.

@yung_ancient_one: To be honest it was aight. Looking at the album cover for Golden Age I'd think he'd be on some Knowledge of self (Black consciousness) steez, but he just seemed to be challenging other rappers.

If you already happen to listen to either of these groups then I apologize.

@nelomaxwell: I typed a post but it glitched on me or something. I tried to edit it but it keeps glitching. I decided to delete it.

Ok... I think my previous post went something like....

DAMN!

I don't think you're gonna like !MAYDAY! or Logic now.

I wanted to say Ab-Soul and Underachievers but I know you heard of em.

I can only think of Tito Lopez right now. If you don't care much for it then Imma need time to come up with something else.

I can't think of any new doodes you haven't heard that you might like.

I want to say Action Bronson because he has bars but... he talks a lot about food.

... I think you're good my doode. You like Childish Gambino. You're really not THAT behind, besides you might not be missing much. I mean Dizzy is making a lot of noise as a newbie IMHO. Again, everyone else you know or... might not be for you.

Jazz (classics)

  • Sonny Rollins - Way Out West (fairly sparse arrangement but contagious melodies, all time favorite jazz album)
  • Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
  • Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (Favorite Mingus album)
  • Sonny Sharock - Black Woman (This album is really hit or miss with most people)
  • Miles Davis - Sorcerer (Favorite Miles album)
  • Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool (The Miles album to own if you could only have one)
  • Duke Ellington - Soul Call
  • John Coltrane & Don Cherry - The Avant-Garde
  • John Coltrane - Coltrane's Sound (Favorite Coltrane album)
  • Albert Ayler - Live in Greenwich Village (Ayler is an underrated genius. Most songs start off with melodies snatched straight from hymnals but become unrecognizable after the two minute mark)
  • The Ornette Coleman Quartet - Ornette! (Favorite Ornette album)
  • Jack Dejohnette - Pictures (Most albums put out by drummers I've found to be shaky -looking at you Billy Cobham- but Dejohnette surprisingly pulls this one off quite well.
  • Keith Jarret - The Koln Concert (One of the few piano-centric albums I dig)
  • Keith Jarret, Garry Peacock, Jack Dejohnette - Inside Out

Odd time signatures...sounds like Math Rock good sir.

Slint - Spiderland (Nosferatu Man has one of the most ridiculous time signatures I've heard outside of Jazz. Posted video at bottom, it's one of my favorite songs ever)

Chavez - Better Days Will Haunt You (Little more cut and dry than slint but every now and then they'll throw in some wacky timing too)

Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Drums and Guitar duo that like to make noise...typically very fast noise in odd times)

Zach Hill - Astrological Straits (Drummer of Hella's first solo album. Odd mix of noise, pop, psychedelia, and math.

I don't have all my cds and records moved in yet so this is all I could think of off the top of my head.
