Making height and reach the same is sort of ridiculous imo since part of what makes Tyson so powerful was his compact build and short arms. A big part of what made Ali so good was his size to go with his speed. Ali still wins though 8/10. Tyson would win sometimes I think and Ali could be beaten though it could be argued that his true prime was before he got barred during which he never lost. I think Ali's ability to get in a guy's head before a match and ability to think in the ring would be too much for Tyson.

Tyson at his peak... he was an animal, he's not got the refined skill of Ali, but he's got bags of ferocity, stamina, durability, strength and isn't slow. Ali is reserved, faster and nimbler but isn't lacking in strength, durability and stamina either.

Could go either way in my opinion, can Ali wear Tyson down by keeping out of his reach and wearing him down? Yes, but it's just as possible that he gets pounded in a vicious flurry. Ali couldn't afford many slip ups in this fight. They both have the exact counteracting agent for each other, yet neither is weak enough in the stat the other has an edge in by enough for it to be a clear advantage.

In fact, the biggest factor in this fight is Tyson's ferocity vs Ali's cool headedness. Can Ali play it smart, keep out of dodge and wear him down while riling Tyson up or will he just end up sending Tyson into a manic frenzy he can't handle?

The answer is I don't know.

Height and reach the same ? Thats Tyson weak points short range and hight. In a fight like this what ounce gloves ? Sounds funny but it matters big time.

Watch a louis v Tyson. Im not saying that louis is a copy of ali but the reach advantage wrecks Tyson.

Okay for one ali could never have the punching power of Tyson and tyson would be unable to go 12 rounds deep with ali i think.

Ali can move, and work the ring. By that i mean ali will make you move non stop. If you dont move more then a jab will come at you. Also ali will jab until his arm falls off. Again keeping you moving and grinding on you a jab at a time.

Tyson wants to get close and crank you up with powerful powerful hooks and so on. Tyson also has a well tested chin... but who knows since he was on coke most of the time.

tyson will have to do one of two things. 1 stand his ground and make ali move to him or 2 crowd the living hell out of ali, Pushing and corner traps and clinch. All three tyson is good at. T wants to tie up for a break and to hammer you with a wicked left upper cut.

Yes ali is a flashy dance and can talk a mean game but ali can not handle being hit over and over. One of the reasons he has great footwork. Watch a foreman v ali fight. And then youtube foreman hitting heavy bag. The heavy bag foreman is poping is 200lbs easy and foremens trainer was holding the bag. Both the bag and trainer would rock back hard from a foreman hook and of course you will see the monster dent foreman put in the heavy bag.

The ropes save ali. The ropes held him up in a lot of fights. Smart boxing yes but dont believe ali had that in mind all along. It was an act of desperate man when he fought foremen and it worked. You would the dope if you thought other wise.

I would say this would come down to who lands a punch at the right time. ..

Tyson with a burst of speed and power throwing combos ?

Ali grinding tyson down to the last inch of his being and ending it all with a straight right to the face of tyson ?

Saying ali wins hands down...well thats the magic of ali. He can put that idea in your mind.

I don't know lol

Ali hands down. Landslide victory.

Not sure why height and reach is the same. That fudges up their respective styles.

Hm. Some good points made so far in this thread. I just want to add, Ali would in no way be intimidated by Tyson the way a lot of fighters were but there's a good chance of Ali being able to mess with Tyson's head and wear him down psychologically. If the fight goes on too long Tyson would burn out physically and mentally.

Not saying that it would happen for sure or would give Ali the win but it's something to think about.

I agree. Are you of the opinion that Ali is the greatest of all-time? Also, where would you rank Rocky Marciano?

@dccomicsrule2011: I'd have to say Ali is the greatest Heavyweight of all time; and very arguably, the greatest of all time (either him or Sugar Ray Robinson).

I think I'd rank Marciano as an ATG around #8 or #9 - due to accomplishments. But if I'd have to say how he'd fair against other Heavyweights, I think he'd lose badly against the likes of Tyson, Ali, Frazier, etc.

Height and Reach the Same?

Ali:

  • Higher IQ
  • More Skill Feats
  • Fought vs Better Competition and actually won
  • More Endurance
  • Better Durability
  • Faster, and overall more quickness

Tyson:

More Knockout Power

==============================

Making Height and Reach the same hurts Tyson much more than it helps. Now he can't curl up like a turtle and take the durability advantage. Being shorter and having those short, but powerful arms is what made Tyson great. It was like fighting a box turtle.

Ali wins.

@lukehero: Prime Mike Tyson actually struggled with the Muhammad Ali imitator James Tillis. That was an indication that a poor man's Muhammad Ali gave Tyson's style problems, the real deal would beat Mike.
