Still HP for all rounds except books (only cause I haven't read the LOTR novels)
Lord of the Rings vs Harry Potter
The harry potter series was poorly written and incredibly dull and cheesy. It's disgraceful to even call it "fantasy". While the LOTR novels weren't written the best either, the world it sets out is amazing. LOTR in every category, although Legolas in the movies was annoyingly perfect while poor old Gimli got stuck as comic relief.
LOTR
1.Better book's - HP
2.better movies - HP
3.better characters - HP
4.better wtf moments - HP
5.overall what is your favorite - LOTR
Middle-Earth pretty much created an entire genre and is the second bestselling series of all time. It innovated and created themes and elements that are now common today. To compare the influences of the two is laughable and this is from someone who enjoys Harry Potter.
To be fair..that's not the question though. It's not "Which inspired more literature" it's which you like more in the following categories.

Still, that is what makes LOTR's better in more categories for me, knowing that I'm reading/watching something deeper and more powerful. It just makes it hard to put it up against Harry Potter for me, since they go for different directions in their writing.
@maccyd: Eh, I kinda disagree. For me, what matters is the plot itself, not how "deep'' or "iconic" it is. I have to ask, which world do I like better? Which has me more interested, which characters do I gravitate toward more? The answer to all three of those questions is Harry Potter.
It's like saying, which band do you like more? The Beatles or White Stripes? Sure, Beatles are more iconic and have done more for music...but I just like White Stripes songs more.

Depth is a part of its plot, you can reread/watch LOTR and discover new things you didn't notice the first time, interpret things differently than before, connect previously unseen dots, read the backstory on a certain aspect etc. Harry Potter may be good, but it doesn't have that angle for me, that re-readability/ re-readability etc. LOTR has a entire world and history built around with subtle complex themes around it that you can explore after the "main plot" ends.
Harry Potter books were good, but its still like LotR>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Harry Potter.
Movies are hard to judge, as its 3v7.
Characters? Definitely LotR. Both series never really developed their characters, but LotR has more of them.
Wtf moments? Harry Potter. Book LotR is in some cases obvious, sometimes isnt. Harry Potter has a wtf moment in most of the books.
Overall? Lord of the Rings.
1. Better book's
Lord of the Rings
2.better movies(so far)
Lord of the rings
3.better characters
...Lord of the rings
4.better wtf moments
Lord of the rings
5.overall what is your favorite
Lord of the rings...I hate Harry Potter
1.Better books -Lord of the Rings. Better writing. It's on a world of its own. Just pure epic. Harry Potter for me was the more "exciting" of the two but Lord of the Rings was just more than that. It was emphatic to say the least. It's a high epic that can be compared great mythologies. It just felt that it was given way more effort and inspiration to conceive. Plus HP books got darker and darker, moving away from its original feel and theme, which for me was what made the series popular.
2.Better movies(so far) -Gotta go with Lord here. HP movies are great but the same with the books, it strayed from its original feel. And the battles were just amazing. Swords and spears and shields and cavalries are just more of an eye candy than light flashing from wands.
3.Better characters -Lord of the Rings, the characters (both good and evil) had deeper motives and convictions. Frodo (though very irritating) was much sympathetic than Harry. Gollum had a deeper character than Dobby, Gandalf and Saruman were way more mystical than Dumbledore and Snape. The Naz'gul (though homogeneous) are just more badass than the dementors and death eaters. I found Voldy more interestng than Sauron though (Trilogy-speaking, Silmarillion not included).
4.Better wtf moments -Harry Potter. I never really felt any WTF moments in LOtR. Every "twist" was not that big a deal. Saruman's evil? Meh! Gandalf's alive? Meh! But in HP, it's like... Dumbldore dead?!? WTF!!! Snape is a villain?!? WTF!!! Snape is not a villain?! WTF??? Hocruxes? WTF??? Harry is a ****** (hidden for spoilers sake) WTF?!?
Yeah pretty much.
LOTR. I can see why some people may not be fans of the books or the movies for that matter. I'll be honest LOTR is one of my all time favorite books but it can get a little dry sometimes. Personal preference comes into play here obviously. But even if you don't like the LOTR movies or book, you can't deny the achievements they have made, and those achievements dwarf anything HP could ever hope to do.
Lord of The Rings demolishes Harry Potter in every category.
and its really not fair to compare the books. Lord of The Rings was written by a once in a lifetime kind of writer. I doubt we'll see a writer like Tolkien in the 20__s (i do hope im wrong though)
LOTR is better. Tolkien created a universe that has been aped for decades.
Harry Potter is great in it's own right. Great characters and a whimsical magical world.
Love em both but LOTR all the way for me.
Blasphemy to compare. Tolkien created a modern epic; a vast world akin to Greek mythology. Harry Potter is a children's book about wizards. I have nothing against HP but these 2 are too different to compare.
1. Better book's
2.better movies(so far)
3.better characters
4.better wtf moments
5.overall what is your favorite
1. LOTR
2. LOTR if you count the original trilogy and not the mediocre Hobbit Prequels. Otherwise HP since its only standing prequel so far Fantastic Beasts blows the Hobbit trilogy out of the water.
3. I think Harry Potter has a lot more defined characters overall than LOTR if we look at the development in the later novels and emphasis on the supporting cast like Snape.
4. Harry Potter had better wtf moments.
5. Overall LOTR.
1. Better book's - LOTRS personally.
2.better movies(so far) - LOTRS stomps.
3.better characters - Either way, HP had great character development especially in the books.
4.better wtf moments - LOTRS by far
5.overall what is your favorite - HP as a kid/child, LOTRS as a young adult.
1. Lotr
2. Lotr
3. Lotr
4. Harry Potter
5. Lotr
Huh, surprised I haven't commented on this yet.
Yeah, Harry Potter doesn't even register to LotR. The two are in completely separate categories, really. One is a pop teen fantasy series while another is a timeless masterpiece. LotR STOMPS.
Harry Potter stomps
LOTR all the way all categories.
While Harry Potter was definitely enjoyable books and movies despite the movies straying from the books a bit. Still the Harry Potter series was one of a kind and will always be remembered with amazing characters and memorable moments. There was was more depth with Harry Potter but LOTR was just a Master piece from novel to cinema. Lord was just more epic over all with more angles.
