If there is one thing that some designers don't seem to understand it is that things should not try and be too many things at once. The F-35 as a consequence of being a "multi-role fighter" means it really is not good at anything, it doesn't have the payload to be a proper bomber and its not built right to be an air superiority fighter. You don't try and make a lawn-mower that can also be used as a shavng razor, that would be stupid and it wouldn't do either job well, much like the F-35. In a fight I would say one F-22 would likely beat 2 or 3 F-35's.
Don't even get me started on the F-35B, short take off vertical landing (STOVL) variant, that thing is likely to be an even bigger mess than the standard F-35A.
