Let's Play a Game of Chess

What is this thread for? Read the title stupid.

(Hint: We're playing Chess.) Within this thread, you can:

1. Invite and challenge friends.
2. Play a simple yet fun game of chess.
3. Prove that you're smarter than everyone else.

Now you may be wondering, "But how can we play chess on Comic Vine?" ...Just like this:

See that 8x8 grid above? Simply highlight the entire grid, copy-&-paste it into a message, and callout a friend to start a chess match. However there are a couple things you should keep in mind.

How the Game is Played

1. Tag someone you want to challenge. If they accept, decide who gets White and who gets Black.
2. Copy-&-paste the grid (above) to start the game.
3. During each turn, copy the grid from the previous turn (and modify it accordingly).
4. Whenever it's your move, simply [Cut] out the symbol for the chess piece you want to move and [Paste] it correspondingly at another point on the grid.

IMPORTANT: Whenever you move a chess piece, an empty space will be left behind on the chessboard grid (where the symbol used to be). Always fill in those empty spaces with a dash (-) mark before passing your turn. Any spaces left empty will screw up the game.

General Rules (skip this if you already know how to play chess)

Chess Piece	Symbol	How it Moves	Helpful Tips
King:	♔	One space in any direction (forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally)	The King can never move himself into check (where he can be captured).
Queen:	♕	As far as she can go in any direction (forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally)	The Queen may not skip over or past her own piece.
Rook:	♖	As far as it can go forward, backward, or sideways	The Rook cannot travel diagonally.
Bishop:	♗	As far as it can go diagonally	The Bishop always stays on the same color on which it started.
Knight:	♘	Two squares in one direction (forward, backward, or sideways) and one more square at a 90 degree angle	The Knight makes the shape of an "L" when it moves. It does not move diagonally. It can also jump over other pieces.
Pawn:	♙	Only moves forward one space, but captures one space diagonally	On their very first move, Pawns can move two spaces.

1.Understand the object of the game and how it's achieved. To win, you need to checkmate your opponent's King. This means to get his King in a position where he will be captured no matter what: He cannot move and no other piece can protect him.

• The secondary goal is to get rid of all your opponent's pieces (thus making checkmate easier). You capture pieces by landing on the square they occupy.
• This is all going on while you're protecting your own King, obviously.

2.Start the game. The player using White pieces begins the game by moving a piece. To move a piece,[Cut] out the symbol for one of your chess pieces and [Paste] it to another location on the chessboard grid. Turn then passes to Black. Regardless of the moves, players always take turns (there is no doubling up or skipping).

3.Capture an opponent's piece by moving a piece into an occupied square. If the point is occupied, simply replace the enemy symbol with your own symbol to capture it. Any captured pieces do not return for the remainder of the game.

4.Continue play with each player moving one piece per turn until the game ends. Play continues until a King is checkmated or a stalemate occurs.

How the Board is Set Up (important details inside)

Step 1: Make sure the table has 8 rows and 8 columns to replicate the layout of a chessboard. The quickest way to do this is to [Copy] the preset grid above which is already formatted correctly. Click here to 'Jump to Top' of the page.

Step 2: Remember that ALL spaces in the chessboard grid must be filled with a dash (-) mark, if not already occupied by a chess piece symbol: (♔♕♖♗♘♙). Never leave spaces empty.

Step 3: Notice that every square in the chessboard is set to "Header 2"-sized font, exactly as this sentence is written in. Keep it that way.

If your concern is losing track of your game with other matches going on:

• Keep a heading at the top of every message whenever passing your turn. The heading should say your name, your opponent's name, and the move number to make the match easily identifiable (i.e. "[Your Name] vs [Opponent's Name] - Move 1") and easy to locate. See below for clarification.
• ALWAYS tag your opponent when passing your turn. This will direct him to the exact place you left off in his notifications.
