Is it weird for me to like poetry, but not care for spoken word? I do really love poetry; I love literary and musical poetry. However, once I listen/watch someone speak the words, in the dramatic way that spoken-word poets do, I immediately loose interest in the poem. I can listen to a person recite poems, but, if they add the dramatics and emphasis that comes with spoken-word, it distracts me from the actually poem.

Is that weird?

I feel the same way.

Personally, I appreciate reading poetry. Hate writing it, but I understand the appeal.

@superstay: It's not weird at all. For me, it's like reading a book and then watching the movie adaptation. Their vision of what the work means and yours can be very different, and seeing someone else's interpretation can be sort of jarring. With poetry, I think that when you see it written down you can add your own inflection and intonation, you decide the rhythm of the piece as you read it, and this is all affected by what the poem means to you personally. Someone reading poetry aloud...well that is all about their interpretation of the piece. And so I guess I often find that harder to enjoy and relate to.

It is because when you read it the poem becomes your own, and when it is read aloud, that puts the gender and tone of the reader behind the words and seems to change the poems appeal
