Savior was a Superman-type in Moonstone's Captain Action, and has been used a few other times as well.

Astonishman was a Superman-type killed by Thor in Dark Horse's The End League.

It's tough to come up with a cool name that hasn't been used. I want a better understanding of copyright law though, because I see name duplication from company to company, with no lawsuits, while other creators and companies defend their character names vigorously.

Bollocks! I just came up with that name for fun! I didn't know there was a actual Superman rip-off!

Here is an idea, try using mythological names there is not copyright holding them. For instance, I once created a Wonder Woman pastiche named Frejya, the Norse Goddess of Love.

I highly agree, which is why I wrote the blog Mining the Public Domain, OR Why Wonder Woman Should Be Better (<-- shameless plug). Mythological names and anything over 75 years old is public domain, so it can be used by anyone, as long as their version is not like someone else's version. I could create my own Frejya, as long as she's not like your Frejya. The nice thing about public domain characters is they have established roots (the original written works) so even in the first story of your version of the character, readers have at least a passing sense of established history for the character, even if you twist that history to your own ends.

It's what's making the current Wonder Woman great, it's what makes Fables great, and why we love Hellboy, ABC's Once Upon a Time, and why something like Snow White & the Huntsman interests us. Public Doman is flat awesome.

(note: yeahhh, I had to edit. Late night and posting does not for good spelling make. Sheesh.)

There must be hundreds, if not thousands of names that haven't been used. Think about all the different adjectives and nouns and the order that they could be used in. Also whether a name could be one or more words. For example, Spider-Man could be Spiderman or Spider Man. All the names that currently exist could be changed just a little bit. You can add different words to a current name. Spider-Man's villain, the Lizard, could be Lizardman or the Silver Lizard. She-Hulk could be Hulk Woman. Spider-Man could also be Captain Spider or Mr. Spider. There are countless possibilities.

Gambler is already used.
Erik is already used (seriously?)
Nobody is already used.
Dane is already used.
Creator is already used.
Buckshot is already used.

Nexus of Light, Katzman, Lord Saturn, Power Nexus, Lance Uppercut, Chaos Prime, Dark Huntress, Lunacyde, Decoy Elite, Matezoide, Retnex, Strafe Prower, and Progenitor are still great names though.

Here's a few i think could be used seriously:

The Futurist (or simply Futurist): For a genius type hero, regardless of powers

The Woodsman: perhaps throws and fights with hatchets? Maybe got that name after killing a mob boss nicknamed "The Wolf", doesn't need to be literal.

Uplink: Something to do with hacking, maybe a robot that can synch with the internet, become a digital ghost like that

Mortal: For the man/woman on the team without powers, who gets by with wits and gadgets.

I can't think of a non-laughable animal that hasn't been used for a name though. Of course, some are obscure, like there are 3 Hyena/Hyena man named characters out there, but they're all minor villains from decades ago, i don't think anyone would complain if a new hero was named Hyena.

Ocealot
Gazelle
Hummingbird
Bronco
Simian

I don't think any of those are taken.
Of course, they're not particularly intimidating names, but I don't think they're any worse than Robin, Ant-Man, Blue Beetle, Owl, etc.

Also, there are a lot of dinosaur names that I don't think anybody is using. Archaeopteryx. Velociraptor. Heck, even Tyrannasaurus Rex is still open.
Those heroes would have to get nicknames though. I wouldn't want to have a superhero name that's five syllables long and I can't spell correctly on my first try.
