I'm between jobs right now, and as such I'm missing out on HUGE amounts of comics and events going on in the Marval and DC universes. I could always just download the issues for now and purchase them later, but that just doesn't sit well with me.
I remember a long time ago, I had heard about a movie. I downloaded it illegally to check it out. Turns out, it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. As soon as I had the money, I bought it on Blu-Ray. But does that make the initial download "okay"?
What are your opinions?
Is piracy ok if you have good intentions?
No, it does not make it "okay" that you got the pirated copy. Buy the rental and buy the finished film. Piracy is stealing.
" download it... then delete that sh!t after you use it... aint nothing wrong with that in the eyes of my God... :P
"
If you delete them after reading, then you're no worse then the guys that just read the issues at the store.
In all honesty I think if you do intend to eventually buy them, no harm no foul. Otherwise a lot of talented people put a lot of work in to them, and your basically taking money out of their pockets.
its perfectly okj to bootleg something if you have good intentions.
i sometimes buy bootleg films from a guy at my local flea market fr $5/film. sometimes they are good quality w/ some minor inperfections, sometimes they are just plain awful.
" If you delete them after reading, then you're no worse then the guys that just read the issues at the store. "
Just download the comics and don't be such a ladyman about it :P
I dont get the "good intentions" aort though.
What are you gonna show the comics to underpriviliged kids?
Well if you're having financial problems I guess it's not a big problem downloading the issues on the net ( if you buy them after), but the bad thing in this is that you're encouraging the ones who put these files on the internet and those who actually never buy...but just download.
But seriously, who hasn't downloaded more than a 1000 songs on the internet??? haha
It depends if you're downloading something that is rare and can only be found on a file sharing site.
Sometimes it is not bad, but with the cost of most things I can't blame anyone who uses those sites.
Comics are priced to high right now and so is the comic magazines and they have cut down on their page count without a price cut.
They are scam artist. So, download to your heart's content.
I'd probably say no, for all occasions, because most of the things people end up downloading are things they could buy on their own, even if they don't want to have to spend money on it, and that's just wrong. The only times I can see it as less wrong (still wrong, mind you, just less) are three things:
-1) You would never (Not just probably not, but never) buy it if piracy never existed, for whatever reason (Money, availability, ect)
-2) You not just intend to buy it afterword, but will. Both of these are a slippery slope however, as its easy to say after the fact that you wouldn't buy it, or that now that you used it, you realize it's not worth buying.
-3) It is something incredibly rare, and the only reason anyone wants to buy it is rarity, rather than for its intended use, like if you can find antique comic scans on the internet, its less wrong, since it's not worth the small fortune the comic is worth to read it, if that's all you want it for. Again, this can be contended by the large amount of collected volumes that contain reprints of these valuable comics, for this example, or 'movie collections' or 'song collections' for those mediums.
Though just because it's wrong, doesn't mean you can't do it. Just don't have any delusions of altruism.
Also, things like music and such, are also less 'wrong' in the sense of the creators not getting their due, since artists rarely get any significant percentage of their record sales, hence why they must do tours, and sell overpriced concert merchandise. Again, still wrong, but it's damaging the more parasitic producers than the artists, so don't feel too bad. Don't feel like you're doing any good, but don't beat yourself up over it.
I always pay for movies!
When I pay for a movie, I feel really proud of myself! that I have atleast contributed a little to it's success.
I watched Twilight 2 times, New Moon 3 times and Eclipse 2 times (but planning on seeing it more!)

From a technical standpoint, so long as you're not pirating it to distribute it to others, it's not really that bad. Just ask the seven gigs worth of music I have on my hard drive.
" A sin in the name of goodwill is still a sin. "Don't worry, simple belief in Jesus as the "messiah" is a go to heaven free pass if you are a christian, going to Jerusalem to touch a big block of stone does the same if you are a Muslim, but with the shenanigans airliners pull, you're better off going by boat. Jews have it hardest though, since you must obey all 613 commandments without fail or Yahweh gives you the boot.
:P

" @Cherry Bomb said:I'm spinning in my grave... wait... that didn't come out right... Twilight ruined my attempt at writing. I was trying to write a vampire book, but anyone who I tried talking to about it always compared it to twilight, even though it is nothing like it. I tried forever to try and differentiate it to people, but the connections (Book with teen female protagonist, and male supporting Vampire... that's it. No romantic angle, no other connections) are apparently too much to overlook... Not to mention I had the idea before Twilight was even published [/miniragerant]" @scourgexlvii said:I'd be fine if twilight didn't call those things they had vampires, which essentially poop on every vampire trope ever. but I digress: I have no problem with the book/movie franchises. It's not my thing, but the worst part of it is that it has made vampires popular for all the wrong reasons.
No, I meant that I really do want to support the people that entertain us so much. They're the reason we're on this site, and they deserve a decent living off of it. My point was that if I download the comics now but pay for them later, no one gets hurt. I'm still totally on the fence about this one. I'm a musician, and people downloading my music for free (not that anyone even cares enough to do *that*) doesn't make my rent any easier to pay. It's nice to know people care, but I can't take that to my landlord as payment.

If you're wallet's empty for a long time and you downloaded a lot of four colour entertainment would you really purchase every issue you read?
If you really feel conflicted about it probably best not to download.
The question is bigger that most of you understand, Twiligth is made in a very horrible way, is a Hallmark Tv movie and still they sell you that as a real movie, then they take money from you.
The new Wolverine movie, they dont care about the CGI and they sell you a product that have problems.
I think to say Piracy, child porn or killing show how many people is mad in this world, still less people care about child porn and killing, is a crime yes, but face it, since the movie, comic, music and all thee ntreteiment industry sucks so hard, mean they only care about your money and for the same they dont care about you, then you actually could breack the deal that they made with you about give you good things for your money.
