Sometimes, when i'm reading a fan-work, or watching something fan-made in a series, I start to realize that this is better then the original.

Like I would read the canon graphic novel, then I would read a fan-work based on it, which in turn i find better, more entertaining then the actual canon.

Is it wrong to feel that way?

Not at all.

Professional shouldn't have positive or negative connotations, as it simply means someone who's paid for their work.

Absolutely not. In alot of instances it does have more to do with what sells the best as opposed to the actual quality in regards to official works.

Why does it matter? Everyone that creates is a fan of something that inspires them to create so hypothetically everything is a fan work to some extent.

I know, but it feels wrong to think some guy/girl with no professionalism can interest me more then the person who created the series and the characters and what not...

Nope, because some of the fan work I've read were more entertaining than the original work. I've actually written tons of fan fiction for this site.

It is OK to feel something is mess up after seeing that amateurs can do better job then paid professionals, especially when the original feels like shadow for their former greatness and it seems like no one cared about what their doing.

If the original is good and fan made better then it shows the original is inspiring. That is what people want a show that can move people forward. That kind of compassion is great. The series will live on with stuff like that

What are you talking about?

Creating a fan work does not indicate a level of professionalism or lack there of. It just indicates that they are a fan of a given thing.

There are professional fan works, which is essentially what Star Wars: Clone Wars is.

And that you "ARE" a professional, doesn't mean you "ACT" like a professional which is what professionalism is, acting professional. For all you know the original creator is the most unprofessional creator ever, which a lot of them are, while the fan-work creator is the most professional.

Whether the creator is paid or not should have no baring on whether you or anyone thinks it is good.

Not at all, it's perfectly fine.

There are some amazing writers out there, and some great fans, though sometimes a fan may not be getting paid for their work they are still really passionate about the subject and wish to write about it. Enjoying their contributions isn't a bad thing at all.

@durakken: Let me rephrase what i'm saying.

What I'm saying is, a fan creates a completely fanmade story, which has no impact on the canon universe. Yet the way they write is more interesting then the actual creators work, to the point where i'm more looking forward to the fanmade, then the original.

The reason why I feel this is wrong is because you like the completely irrelevant story better then the original. But even though you like it, it has no impact on the actual characters, and instead of becoming engrossed in the actual characters you become engrossed in some fanwork.

It feel like it's wrong to prefer the fanmade characters, because they are essentially irrelevant. You're not liking the actual characters, just someones interpretation.

Also I kinda feel like it's a betrayal to the canon universe and the original author.

Does that even make sense? I don't know.

@ximpossibrux:

To be fair, a character and the universe they are in does belong to the author and/or publishing house and in saying that, many authors (like Anne Rice) go after fan-fic writers and then you have the Neil Gaiman's who just love it -

So, don't feel bad about it - if there is an author out there who introduced a character with the intention of making money by grabbing your imagination, then that same imagination can go think up whatever it wants and if you come across a fan's imagination in written form you enjoy more than the original work then you are pretty lucky. More entertainment for you to enjoy.

My two pence. :)

You say it's irrelevant what happens to the fan made characters, but is it any more relevant what happens to the still-fictional canon characters? I know we all like to imagine our favorite stories take place in a real universe, so it seems like what happens to them matters, but really it is no more important then what happens in the fan fiction, since everything is still in your head either way.

Out of curiosity, what fan work in particular do you feel this way about? I've read a couple Batman fics that have engrossed me more than any real comic.

No. Fan fiction is the universe's way of dealing with the atrocity that is happening so often in current media.

it should be pointed out... Stargate SG-1, One of the most popular Sci-fi series, is essentially fan-fic of the Stargate movie that doesn't take the movie as 100% canon.

By that logic, a sequel can never be better than the original. Also, creating a story that takes place with established characters in an established universe isn't being a copycat. It's what's done every time the original creator continues the story too.

Can Batman wrestle Joffrey the Monstrous from the Iron Throne? Can Batman tear down the Red Keep, destroy the armies of the mighty Lord Tywin Lannister? In any case I am counting on Tony to avenge his murdered kinsmen.
