Poll Is It Racist To Say "This Is America, Speak English"? (113 votes)
This confuses me a lot :/

In Québec it would be a legitimate thing to say (This is Nouvelle-France legacy, speak french) as the only official language of the stolen country is french (Not talking about Canada de la N-F if you didnt get it)... Now hate on our legit bill 101 b1tch3s.

America doesn't have an official language, so yes. It's not very welcoming at all. Don't like your neighbors? Deal with it.

Pretty much this.
Does it matter if America has an official language or not? We speak ENGLISH here. It doesn't have to be made "official". If you are in America then you need to learn to speak English. It can be rude to say but it is in no way racist.
Idk if I would say its racist, but its extremely rude and inconsiderate.
It's kind of silly without knowing the persons circumstances. I'd love for the people that say this carelessly to take a vacation in a foreign country and be told the same thing about a language they don't know.
It kind of feels similar to being harassed and have your intelligence insulted online for minor spellling mistakes, not everyone speaks perfect english.
@chimeroid: I dont think he is talking about tourists at all. He is referencing telling that to people who only speak Spanish or another language, and refuse to learn English, or if they know English, just speak in the other language instead. English may not be the "official" language, but it is by far the language most people know, the language our laws are written in, the language court precedings are had in, ect, ect.

Tell me how the United Statiens of North America were there before the French, Spanish and Natives...

I wouldn't say racist, especially if you're saying that to all peoples including your own ethnic group, but you're pretty dumb for saying it.
America doesn't have a national language, we're a nation of immigrants, how can you tell people to "speak English?"
Why? Because the majority only speaks English?
If you're just going around saying "speak English" to Asian, African, South American immigrants, you're racist.
If you see Germans, French and other Europeans speaking their languages and you say that to them too, you're just ignorant then--not really racist.
@rouflex: Why does it matter who was in America first? Right now, English is the language.

In any type of business or professional setting (such as a retail store or a job interview) its fair, and not at all ignorant or dumb, to expect someone to speak english. It may not be listed as our official language, but anyone coming to America is stupid if they expect the people of this country to cater to them speaking any foreign language whether it be Russian or Spanish.
Now if you walk up to a family that happens to be speaking another language and then demand of them to speak english, then yeah that's dumb and racist. But honestly, is anyone actually doing that?
"This is Canada, you speak French, if you want, we wont make you, sorry for the inconvenience, enjoy your stay!"

Life change, things change.
"This is Canada, you speak French!"
Said no British Canadian ever.

It is easy to say that when you had France by your side, Bas-Canada did try to make his independance in 1837-1838 :P.

Indépendance is a old fashion and French folks are demons but Durham movement and English occupation of Canada is not... The Canada can die for all we care!... Alberta opinion:We pay! Why dont we have the capital already? You know what? We will join usa or take Washington!

It's not racist, but maybe a bit ignorant. I don't see how it can be a racial thing. A language can be learned by anyone.
@eisenfauste: Look at that flag! Don't you heard the waves of freedom already? THIS IS CASCADIA!

Depends on the situation but does appear rude.
If understanding someone is problematic perhaps the statement could be phrased differently.
Racist? No. Ignorant? Depends. If the person is a tourist or some sort of visitor then obviously they may not speak the language. However if you live here you should accept that even though there is no official state language that the predominant language spoken is English and you should learn to read and speak it. I remember a case in my home state back in the 90s where a woman who only spoke Spanish ran a stop sign and t-bone another car.
So, in short, whatever country you are a resident of I don't find it unreasonable to be expected to learn and speak the predominant language. State sanctioned or not.
