Poll: Is Game of Thrones worth it? (54 votes)

Yeah.... 26%
Hell no! 19%
Why the hell haven't you started watching it yet?!?!? 56%

My friends are constantly nagging me to start watching it and as some of my closer friends here would know... I don't have much time on my hands anymore.

Please sincerely answer if this show is worth watching and factor in that this said person already doesn't have much time on their hands.

@the_stegman: A case could be made, but I give the slight (ever so slightest) edge to GoT.

I usually avoid comparisons by saying:

Best cable program of all time - Breaking Bad.

Best premium network program of all time - Game of Thrones.

It lives up to the hype, probably the best show on HBO since The Wire.

Depends. You looking for actual story? Then no. You looking for hours of nothing interspersed with big twists that shake you deeply but ultimately don't go anywhere? Then yes.

@matteopg: Hah! Okay, I'll bite. Explain yourself.

@jaken7: Breaking Bad is better than GoT imo. Much better.

Breaking Bad was predictable, much like every other show on tv. You knew that the main characters were coming back every week. Game Of Thrones? Not so much.

Oh, no no no no, it wasn't bait, really. I didn't phrase it well but it was my opinion. I watched the show and read the first two books and I just don't see the appeal.

I could give you a list of things that seem really boring or inconsequential to me, but they would ultimately be opinions... it's not like there are any firm facts about fictional works, and I don't want to offend anyone XD

My point is that the story is very slow and showcases more than it narrates, but that it isn't something inherently bad, of course there's an audience for that.

@matteopg:

*scratches head*

Huh, that was all a lot more reasonable than I thought it would be. Like 1000x more. It's not even an opinion based in ignorance since you've watched the show and read some of the books.

You don't like it, and that's absolutely fine.

Carry on good sir.

@jaken7: no but seriously, sorry for the first post, I read it again and it wasn't well written.

I'm not going to edit it, I'll just leave my mistake up there as a reminder to myself...

@matteopg: Nah, you're fine. Just lacked context, and ends up coming off a little pretentious and cynical. You're ok though, we've all made much worse comments. ^_^

Just giving this a bump, but all Game of Thrones seems like from what I've glimpsed is sex and dragons.....

Am I wrong?

@wolverine08: Those are two components of it, but doesn't even begin to describe the majority of it. Dragons showing up at all are technically spoilers since it doesn't happen until the first season finale.

Read some of the other posts (mainly mine *strokes ego*) to get an idea.

I wouldn't watch it if I were you though. You're a little too young to enjoy the...finer points of the show.

The books sh*t on the show.

Yeah. The backstabbing and double dealing are a big appeal of the show, at least for me. There is a very strong socio-political undercurrent to the show, which is also interesting. The action scenes are pretty solid and yes there is a fair amount of sex and nudity, there's something to appeal to most tastes. Try it, you'll likely find something that interests you about it.

Yes.

I wonder how many people would have heard of GoT if the series never existed...

#126 Posted by lesterlawton (819 posts) - - Show Bio

@maccyd:

The books sold ridiculously well, so I'm guessing quite a few. Copies of the first hardcover were selling for $300 + even before the HBO series (I owned 2 of the first book, and just sold one on ebay for $600).

#127 Posted by MaccyD (4522 posts) - - Show Bio

@lesterlawton: Whoa, that's pretty nice, how much did it cost you originally?

I've the first book at home somewhere and keep meaning to read, however I'm afraid the hype will ruin the book as it'll increase my expectations.

Have you watched Breaking Bad? I ask this because I to am questioning if I should start it or not seeing as I just finished Breaking Bad.

I bought them when they first came out, so around $25 each. The second copy was going to be a birthday present for a friend of mine, but he already had it & I was too lazy to return it. The only problem with reading the books now is that you'll see the HBO characters in your head as you read. Definitely read it though, it's the best fantasy series to come out in ages.

#130 Posted by JakeN7 (12738 posts) - - Show Bio

@maccyd: I hadn't heard of it beforehand, but my aunt has been reading them since they came out. I probably wouldn't have found out about that if she didn't learn I was into the show though.

But yeah, they're pretty popular regardless.

I'm almost done with Breaking Bad. I love that show, as well.

I think I like GoT more... probably a matter of personal bias, though.

That would explain it.

Not to sound like a pretentious asshole, but I envy your season 2 innocence.
