I'm an aspiring writer and I honestly don't like people making fan fictions about the stories I write cause well, they have a tendency to ruin the positive reaction of my readers towards the short stories I write.
(Still kinda young to write novels)

@ms__omega: typos are the wrist : p
Fans think up ideas and stories for their favorite characters all the time. I know I do. Because of this, fan fiction is going to be around. As for how it has affected your writing, I would need some examples of people being turned off of your stories because of something someone else wrote to give good feedback. Any chance you have some examples?
As long as you don't get weird about it.
But those are the best kind
I've seen maybe two fanfics that were well written and engaging.
So compared to the hundreds of thousands out there, it's definitely a bad thing.
As far as the OP's concerns, since he didn't provide examples of fanfiction about his stories, all I can say is that fanfiction has never really bothered me. I ran across one too many bad/troll fics in high school, and it jaded my appreciation for fanfiction to the point where I just don't read it anymore. But it has never affected my love for a franchise.
I remember a girl at my school wrote an extremely detailed sex and drama-oriented fan fic about One Direction, which went into particular detail about her vagina and it's various interactions with the boy band for chapters on end.
Sometimes, it's best to say no to fan-fiction.
I don't understand how someone's fanfic can ruin your readership.
This! It's free advertising lol

...what?
I believe that if you're writing erotic fanfiction, you should draw the line at real people.
Wow opinion seems divided. I started writing in earnest when Marvel just dumped my favourite character by the roadside and changed my favourite series into 'a fanboy's dream'. True there are some bad stuff out there but there's some good stuff as well (just like there are bad comics written by the professionals as well as good stuff)

She had chapter upon chapter of it posted online. It got leaked and everyone in my Year found out about it.
Pretty rough week for her.
Neil Gaiman loves when people write fan-fiction based on his characters. Anne Rice, not so much.
Why would anyone have anything against fan-fiction? Just don't read it. As long as it's not about real people, I think it's a fantastic creative outlet.
If any body says yes then your all scumbags because you don't read my fan fic.
Links pleez?
And I cry rule 34, fan fiction is good times. All the rampant gay sex is what makes it so funny and enjoyable.

it gets worse, believe me. it gets a whole lot worse.
@impurestcheese: Hellz yeahz! Songbird is the bestest!
FanFic sucks though. :/
My Immortal is life changing.
Yup! "I cried sexily I just wanted 2 go 2 the commen room and slit my wrists with mi friends while we watched Shark Attak 3 and Saw 2 and do it with Draco but I knew I had 2 do somefing more impotent" ....pure genius.
How is fan fiction a bad thing? How the hell does it ruin your experience as a writer? Are people making fan fics based off of the characters you are writing or over your own original work? If it is the former you can't stop or expect people to stop writing, you can't stop an idea. As a writer that is something you should appreciate.
As much as I think that quality of fanfiction is very variable, I think your POV is quite self-centered and short-sighted.
As a writer, it's up to you to make people want to write more of your work, despite all the crappy story they have read before you published your own writing.
Real writer have to fight every day against odds and a zillion book badly written that are published and yet deemed "professionnal".
I have the impresssion that you complain against concurrence, if it's really that, you need to grow up.
@ostyo: Hey some of us write Fan-Fic here
Yaoi, Gary/Mary Sue and Twilight fanfiction is EVIL and must be burned with fire; that been said, sometimes you can find rare gems here and believe me, it totally worth digging through countless bad fanfics.
I don't see wHat's tHe problem. THe idea tHat fans are ruining your work is weird because it sounds like you Haven't publisHed anytHing yet, so unfortunately your going to Have to get used to it.
Fans Have ideas and are able to sHare tHem. Fan fiction doesn't Hurt anyone. If anytHing more people sHould do it. Instead of complaining about a creative direction a francHise is going, write some fan fiction.

@impurestcheese: Well, as long it's quality non romance Songbird fan fiction I can forgive you. *pats shoulder*
@ostyo: Nope no real romance
I don't believe fan fictions are a bad thing in the truest sense of what they are. They are just a creative outlet like any other. Ray Bradbury, the Author of Fahrenheit 451, wrote fan fiction when he was a kid. He said in an interview once that he wrote a continuation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Warlord of Mars stories, and her wrote stories about Tarzan. Fan Fiction is just a way for someone to express themselves creatively, some do it for a little while and that's all they do. Others eventually break out of writing Fan Fiction and move onto their own original work. I personally enjoy writing Fan Fiction, because when I write these stories I feel like the characters become my own. It's a very amazing feeling.
Neil Gaiman once said, "If you don't try to make things then all you've done is deprived the world of something only you could have brought to it, because the only one who has your point of view is you."
Also think about something. Geoff Johns, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison? These guys did not create Superman. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, so essentially wouldn't that mean that the very comics we are reading today are at their very core fan fictions, based on an original writers work? Think about it.
@impurestcheese: Then you are forgiven my cheesy friend.
@ostyo: Cool
@impurestcheese: But uh...seriously...totally write a Songbird fic. *nod*
@ostyo: Does Thunderbolts count?
@impurestcheese: Depends, we talking the cool Thunderbolts or that current fan service team?
@ostyo: The team consists of MACH IV, Songbird, Blizzard, Victoria Hand, Orka, Meteorite, Blackheath and Radioactive Man so I'll let you decide what kind of team it is. :-)
@impurestcheese: The cool team! :D
@ostyo: I'll just leave this link here...http://www.comicvine.com/forums/fan-fic-8/marvel-mayhem-thunderbolts-back-catalogue-and-libr-1510338/#0/
I despise fan fiction to be honest, I feel that it skewers creativity. It doesn't effect me in any way though.
Fan Fiction doesn't necessarily affect professional work since many readers are very aware that the fan fictions over these sites are not in cannon and are written by fans who want to see more from their favorite characters. I think that fan fiction is a great way for fans to express their interest in whatever franchise they enjoyed and expand more on it, if they wish. I personally write many fan fictions because I like to see more adventures from my favorite characters or if I don't enjoy something being done in the professional writings, then I could always write the stories the way I want them to. Now, I do understand why fan fictions can be hated, especially when some of the fans get too carried away with their fan fictions, especially those slash fics that just makes every character look bad no matter what. But, I think it's a great creative output for fans to express how they feel about their favorite franchises.
