Poll Is chess a sport? (43 votes)
Okay, I got tired of the Football vs Handegg thread, it was fun for a while but not anymore, so here's another sport thread.

Chess is as much a sport as any Tournament worthy game could be. (Or rather, anything in competitive nature)
@pyrogram: What about your personal opinion?
@mandarinestro: If it's a recognized sport my opinion doesn't matter.
@hayden86: Lol why though?
@pyrogram: Well chess was sanctioned as a sport because most people think it's a sport, so people's opinion does matter.
@mandarinestro: Well, it's recognized as a sport now, so I can't really see an argument. A sport is defined as;
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
Apparently physical exertion means fingers, I don't know HOW it was made a sport... But if the Olympics committee think it is. They are probably more qualified than me xP
Only Chess Boxing is.
I wonder if you can get boxing shaped chess gloves...
@mandarinestro: i have more respect for a game that has been around for hundreds of years.
@hylian: Lol, what if I make it "Is video game a sport?"
No.
This is like that stupid argument that people try to make that video games are a sport. Chess is a mental game, but it isn't a sport.
Sports involve some sort of physical exertion(running, mostly), most have offensive vs. defensive match ups(Golf isn't either) and have to require some athleticism.
Chess and Video games are not sports, they're games. One of them even has the term GAME in it.

This closely matches my opinion. Games and sports are two different things. Odd that chess would be labelled a sport, but there's weirder things in the world. Like thimbles.
Nope.
sportspôrt/nounnoun: sport; plural noun: sports1. an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
The key phrase here is physical exertion.
@thatguywithheadphones: I mostly agree with you but what about the people who say it's physical exertion because your brain is part of your body?
No, it's a game, like poker or love.
Nope, Chess involves skill so that makes it a sport. poker is mostly about luck.
@jonny_anonymous: What are your thoughts on the view which states sport must involve physical exertion? Or do you consider using the brain as physical exertion as well?
@jonny_anonymous: Magic the Gathering involves skill, but I don't call that a sport. A sport to me, requires some form of physical exertion.
@the_stegman: @mandarinestro: Mental effort is physical exertion. There is a reason E-Sports is a thing.
@jonny_anonymous: Many things require mental exertion, doesn't mean they are sports. And E Sports aren't sports in the way this thread is defining the word.
That's just gaming.
@the_stegman: I disagree

As much of a sport that poker is. In my eyes, not every competition is a sport. I don't consider video games a sport. Depends on your definition of sport.
