Instagram has the right to sell your photos

From an article at CNET: Link of full story at bottom.

Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users' photographs without payment or notification, a dramatic policy shift that quickly sparked a public outcry.

The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook finished its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.

So glad I never made an Instagram account. And ok, let's say that selling people's photos is ok, not even a notification(like they would ever pay us anyway)? Imagine one day, just casually checking a site only to see yourself in some ad.

That seems dirty but my question is why would anyone ever want to buy your photos? Who buys photos at all?

Well in the article, it does say that some photos could be used for commercial purposes. Like pics of you and your family having fun at a hotel. That hotel, for example, could buy those pics and use them to promote it.

Well sure they could but they could just as easily get some of their employees to get into street clothes and pose for a staged photo. If it matters that the photo was fake, I'm sure it would matter that it was stolen.

Some companies will send out an e-mail to groups like this and ask for photos like people at the beach or playing basket ball. Instagram can then supply these pictures at a price and you have no right to fight against it nor do you get paid.

Plus it is a much cheaper solution, I imagine.

Mostly corporate people. A stock agency (e.g. iStockphoto) supplies generic photographs of construction workers, doctors et al for corporate people to use on their websites or brochures and such.

And this is just so profoundly idiotic of Instagram and Facebook. Really, what the f^ck?

Things like these lead to much bigger things. You know....First steps. It might be crappy photos today, but it will most likely lead to other, more important, significant, and private things in your life as time goes on.
