What do you guys/gals think of the saying "Ignorance is bliss". Do you agree with it or disagree? Do you think it depends on the situation?

In relation to your own lives, were there moments in which this saying could be applied? That simply not knowing about something was better and might have changed the way you think or who you are today?

I can think of a couple instances where ignorance is bliss. 1) Cheating/infidelity: a person can cheat on you for years but everything is fine UNTIL you find out. 2) Religion: when I was a Christian and believes what all my friends and family believes everything was fine. No problems until they found out I don't believe what I believe. 3)Paternity: I know a few men who loved children for years until they found out the child wasn't there's. I understand leaving the women but disowning the child?

Of course. Simple examples, Tooth Fairy, Santa Clause, and the Easter bunny.

I agree that ignorance is bliss. In fact I believe I would be happier if I was more ignorant. Once I became an adult and found out how the world works and how most things just aren't fair, I always have something to worry about. Some times I long for the days when I was a child and I didn't have to care but part of being an adult is facing the opposition. Life wouldn't be worth living if we didn't have problems.

being well informed on a situation and knowing the futility of changing it is a major bummer.

I don't think ignorance is bliss. But we all need a certain level of ignorance to cope, we couldn't really be aware of all the suffering in all the world all the time for example.

But intentional and purposeful ignorance, is something we really don't need, but that is a different type of ignorance that the saying isn't really referencing to.

Id say a degree of ignorance is necessary, just not the willful kind.

It is bliss. Who wouldn't want to purposely ignore things which point out the bad? Or would require action (or reaction) or necessitate a response to support points of views. Walk the walk and talk the talk sort of thing. It's like when someone says they would kick someone's _ss if that person did such and such. If they don't know, they don't need to back up their words. If innocently unaware, then the ignorance could be bliss in terms of preventing violence and potential suffering but if willingly ignorant, it's cowardice in its purest form. This can be applied to most wilfully ignorant people.

However, sometimes ignorance is a kindness and a mercy. If a child died painfully and horrifically, should the details be withheld or not sought out by those who loved her/him? I can understand that. If something potentially harmful was actively kept in the dark by a few individuals, wouldn't that be okay if that something had no value in it's exposition?

Ignorance is bliss but it's the subjectivity of what bliss is and what it might mean to people that makes it a complicated phrase and difficult to answer.

I agree with the statement. I've seen it plenty of times.
