Then how does the fact that it was actually Yeshua and not Jesus (That actually comes from a Greek misspelling) affect all the Christians that have been saying it wrong for the last nearly 2,000 years? I mean isn't it kind of disrespectful to call him by a name other than the one his mother gave him. I have brought up before that this would be like if you called a dude named John, Juan or Ivan. Sure those names are all technically derived from the same name but it would still be rude to just assume its okay to call them whatever you wanted and they'd be cool with it.

Your Answer is that Jesus sounds more European/American, a lot of people seem to like the portrayal of him as a skinny white guy. When in actuality he looked Middle Eastern, calling him Jesus helps push that image.

Well it depends on the intent... I mean there are millions of Christians who probably don't even know that Jesus is a misspelling of Yeshua... which would mean their intent and faith is in the idea that Jesus is Yahweh's Boy true sacred name. Basically, it's the ignorance of the many Christian Folk who attend these churches.

I'll take the bait. It has been a while since I discussed anything related to religion.

First thought I have is that referring "Jesus" as a misspelling of "Yeshua" may be unnecessarily critical. There are numerous examples of words becoming altered as they migrate from one culture into another. It just happens and it isn't a conspiracy. In fact the Aramaic name "Yeshua" is actually an derivation of the Hebrew name "Yehoshua" which was an extremely common name among the people of Israel. The names Joshua, Elijah and Elisha are all variations.

Second thought is that it is the person of Christ who is important not which variation of His name that is used.

Third thought is that based upon His teachings and character I don't think He would care. Whether He is called

Chesús, Jezuz, Jeesus, Hesus, Hesukristo, or Giêsu, He will still answer because the call is to Him as a person.

@allstarsuperman: I had no intention of starting a flame war, I was genuinely curious. I didn't insult anyone, I was just asking whether the standard rules of politeness regarding names applied to Jesus.

Here, here.

I'd add, if it is a debate purely about respect and decorum, then it is probably better not to speak his name at all, considering Jews were forbidden from ever speaking, writing, or directly referencing the Tetragrammaton, and most Christians believe Jesus is God.

That is a good point. But one of the fundamental game changers about Jesus Christ is that through Him YHWH is now accessible. That is why at his birth He was called Immanuel "God with us". If anything Christ's role as a bridge between YHWH and humanity is the very thing that would make Him not care what name is being used only to Whom or through Whom the address is being made. He is called Immanuel, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Son of David, the Anointed, the Christ, the Way, the Lord as well as Yeshua and Jesus. They all apply.

#46 Edited by Nefarious (18592 posts) - - Show Bio

Does it matter? It is not like Jesus is going appear from heaven and tell you to use his name correctly.

#47 Edited by RisingBean (3563 posts) - - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: You know. I never knew that.

I'll assume Jesus/Yeshua in his infinite patience and love doesn't care. If we all love each other, love him and all the other stuff he wants, getting his name right is just icing on the cake.

Also Kuonphobos seems to be on to something.
