Isnt the age of concent 16 anyways? She should be able to date ya or whatever, but if she was 21 and she had sex with you, then she could go to prison for statuetory rape.
First off, best of luck considering that older women almost never date younger guys. Second of all, you can't be afraid to step up and get turned down. Just ask her, if she says no, shrug it off and move on. You're 16 for christ's sake.

There isn't a definite reason but small numerous ones. A three year age gap somehow doesn't matter as much when it's 39/36. I'm at uni, so I wouldn't date someone who was still in school (going back to the reasons; distance/commitment/ independence). I guess in a way it would be embarrassment (It sounds awful I know). I once got asked out by a really cool guy when I was 15, but he was 13. But I just wanted to remain friends. A single year just makes a huge difference when you're that young.
