We are the only country in the American continent that used to be sovereign monarchy and empire.

And also we are the only country in South America that doesn't speak Spanish, we speak Portuguese. Not a dig at our Spanish-speaking friends, its just everybody seem to think we speak Spanish like everyone else under the tropics :P

Well technically there were at least three major empires in South and central America before Brazil existed, Y'know the Mayan, Inca and Aztecs all had full on monarchy as well.

#11 Posted by Dragonborn_CT (19999 posts) - - Show Bio

@joshmightbe: Yeah, sure... While Brazil is the largest country in SA and kicked the asses of two countries originated from these empires. Just sayin' ◔_◔

Ok I will shut it.

It's interesting how the Portuguese maintained a part of China for some time (Macau), and now the Chinese are investing billions in Brazil and signing treaties to come to their aid in the case of a conflict, essentially making Brazil a Chinese client-state.

How do Brazilians feel about this trend? As a Brazilian, what are your thoughts on the rise of China as a world power and major influence in South America?

So what part of Brazil do you hail from?

#26 Posted by EnigmaLantern (707 posts) - - Show Bio

It's pretty much the same problem in Europe with Portuguese people. I'm Portuguese living in the UK and most people think that 1. I speak Spanish, and 2. Portugal is a city in Spain.

And just to add, the Brazillian monarchy and Empire was started by a Portuguese prince - so basically your empire and monarchy was Portuguese. :P

Brazil was colonized by Portugal, and thus we speak Portuguese language. There is also the fact EnigmaLantern added the Brazillian monarchy and Empire was started by a Portuguese prince - so basically our empire and monarchy was Portuguese.

Did Tropa de Elite paint a fairly accurate picture of life in the favella?

Yes very much. And how police deals with violence.

Hm... I don't know anything about the Chinese wanting Brazil, bro. I don't think they are planning what you think they are doing and or if Brazilians even noticed it to be honest.

#32 Edited by Dragonborn_CT (19999 posts) - - Show Bio

@consolemaster001: lol There were other stereotypes like Brazilians more with being soccer-obsessed, women being bombshells and gigantic street violence rates :P

@ostyo: Putting in perspective, the Southeast is the richest, most populous region in Brazil, while the Northeast is the poorest, least populated one. Its a barren wasteland where the people struggle with droughts that last for years even with very few rains in between. Some places don't have electric energy or Internet. People struggle a lot in the Northeast, and try to find a better life down here.

Because you hate soccer. Like... You can't really be Brazilian if you hate soccer... O_O

Also, Spain and Portugal used to pretty much be the same country, sharing a monarchy and everything. The languages are also super similar minus the really gross accent from the chop side <.<

Makes sense people get confused.

Spanish>Portuguese though... just sayin' >.>
