How much do you think a director should be allowed to stray from the original source material when making comic movies or novels?

Apparently a lot, given The Last Airbender and Dragon Ball Evolution.

As long as it doesn't betray the original material.

As much as he wants to make a good movie! Read the comic and See the movie Kick-Ass. The movie was excellent!

@limpoyzloan: The last airbender is shot for shot the same as the show. It's just that it was a really crapy movie

@z3ro180: I was more talking about the characters, both appearance and personality wise.

@limpoyzloan: Yeah I can agree with you there. The show pretty much says that the world of avatar is based on Asian mythology.

As much as they like though it maybe at their own peril.....

A director is "allowed" to do whatever they want. Along the same lines of "based on a true story". That claim can be slapped onto any movie for as little relevancy as the name of the town. It's entertainment people.

If we'r talking comic movies then there is dozens of different version of the source material so they can mix and match till there hearts content but once you change something to make it totally different then you may as well have just invented your own characters and made a different film
