How many languages do you speak?

Always fun to see where people are from/have roots from or just know the language for the sake of it. I speak English, French & Swedish fluently while my Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Amharic & Breton is everything from all right to poor but understandable. I also understand Patois (Jamaican English).

So how about y'all? What languages do you know or understand?

@the_last_son_of_czarnia: Language is the only barrier that separates people from each other, you should take the time to learn a second at least, I'm guessing you live in America so wouldn't Spanish be a good idea? (since Spanish will probably be the official language of the U.S. in about 50 years).

No, intelligence isn't measured based on your school performance, people who believe it is so are the real idiots. My father & mother comes from completely different countries with different linguistic groups, so I'm lucky to have grown up with 4 languages. Basically it's all about prioritizing, do you think I got good math & science grades after learning all of these languages? Haha, I failed miserably.

@dwightspitz: I'm interested in learning languages but I flunked miserably in school at them.

English is my main, studied Spanish for 5 years at school. Know a bit of French from lessons in primary school. And i taught myself a bit of Italian using the interwebs.

@the_last_son_of_czarnia: From my experience learning a language like you do in school is pretty worthless. The reason I know a little Italian, Spanish & Portuguese is because they're all Latin languages (like French which is my native language) so my learning curve was a lot faster, but the people in my classes (I live in Sweden) couldn't even introduce themselves after 3 years...

Try to get some private or smaller group courses when you're not studying for anything else. Learning a new language requires practice, patience & dedication, especially Latin ones (I guess you've noticed how fast we all speak).

I can pick up languages easy I just don't hold onto them... Grew up learning Spanish... the Latin... then French. Semi-learned some Japanese.

I don't use other languages enough to learn them or vocabulary enough to say anything in them. Funny thing since I have looked into constructing languages and have delt with a number of langauges that way. One thing that keeps me from learning Japanese is their phonographs... to many look alike in katakana and I seem to be blind in some way to hirigana words lol Even when I do know the word I have a hard time finding it.

I've thought it might be evil to use ancient egyptian text to screw with people though.

English is my primary language, though I'm poor with it's grammar in many instances.

Also took 4 years of Latin & 2 years of Ancient Greek.

I speak with a dialect/accent that most of you won't understand too, so I guess that counts :D

English is the only real language I speak but I am fluent in drunk speak, since I don't drink much any more I often act as translator when at social gatherings.

English obviously, I can read French OK but I cannot speak it. I have a horrible problem with pronunciation no matter the language.

Fluent English and survivors french, meaning if you threw me in the slums of France right now with no money or shelter, I could at least make my way for a while. I used to be nearly fluent in it but I moved back to the United States and, with no one to speak to, my skill with the language started to wane. I'm trying to get it back up though.
