I'm curious as to whether the Game of Thrones show version's swordsmen are on par with or better than real life swordsmen in terms of skill only. No Gregor Clegane strength feats, I'm simply interested in their sword skills and techniques.
Anyone know any notable real life master swordsmen?
How do real life swordsmen compare to Game of Thrones swordsmen in terms of skill?
I dunno a lot of real life sword experts, but while GoT is slightly more realistic than some Hollywood movies, it is still a far cry from realistic sword fighting.
Look for example at this fight.
Even this fight, which I consider among the best in the show, has a lack of realism. Jon uses his sword in very wide slashes, leaving himself wide open. Also, a few times he aims for his opponent's weapon, not his body. This happens often in movie fiction, to increase the amount of clashing. IRL you aim for the body and the sword is used for blocking by moving it between your opponent's sword and your body. If a block happens half a meter left and in front of your body, you two are doing sword fighting wrong.
A funny thing to note in this fight btw is that Kit's technique and flow is actually pretty good, arguably among the best of all actor's in the show, while Jon is supposed to be an average sword fighter as per lore.
@the_knight_rhoden: Real swordsman are massively faster than GOA swordsman. That said, GOA are probably a lot stronger than normal humans since they operate on the myth of "ultra heavy medieval swords and armor".
Don't watch the show but having read the books, no, no they don't. In ASoIaF we have people who spend there entire lives devoted to fighting, training alongside other people doing the same under the tutelage of swordsmasters. We also have feats of high tiers in the verse soloing groups of other skilled fighters or fighting through towns or the like, or dueling other master while wounded. We live in a world where swordsmanship isn't really practised with the same zeal at all.
@zetsumoto: If you're doing it right, it does.
@the_stegman: What kind of skill?
