I gotta say Holden Caulfield is one of the most unlikable and obnoxious characters to ever exist. It made the book almost unreadable.
How do people like "Catcher in the Rye"?

Agreed.
There's a lot of ''masterpiece'' novels out there that I don't understand why they're popular...like the Scarlet Letter...
What is this "Catcher in the Rye" you speak of?
I read in french class 2 years ago. Didn't know it was Catcher in the Rye I looked at the inside cover half way through the book.
And by the time I got to the end of the novel I didn't like it, I found Holden to be a very irritating character because he's never pleased with anything (see him at the play) and his plan of being a morale guardian makes him look like a phony. He's not doing it for those kids, he's doing it for himself because nobody was there to protect him from growing up.
