Math used to be my second strongest subject but now I struggle to do basic adding and subtracting. Any suggestions? I was thinking flash cards but it's kind of embarrassing.
Guyss, I'm being serious here, math help
@mitran: What?
Yes Khan Academy is the best resource for anything Math related.. I work in a school and it is a very helpful and impressive site.
My first thought is a learning disorder. Those can make even simple tasks like addition and subtraction difficult.
However I have to ask what you mean by 'big numbers'? Are we talking multiple five and six digit numbers? Are you doing them in your head, pencil and paper or a calculator?
If you have any little bros or sis help them with their HW. I help my cousin with his math homework and it helps because you have to recall all the stuff you learned from previous math classes. BTW school are teaching kids in 3rd grade algebra already it's crazy.
OH NO I -AM- STUPID ARENT I?!?!
Uh, who called you stupid?
I had this exact same problem when I was 13-14. Pick up a hobby that requires basic math skills, like tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons or some kind of card game like Magic.. You'll tangentially hone your ability and have fun.
And trust me, you're not stupid. Like I said, I suffered from the same problem as you and I qualified for Mensa when I was 9 years old.
@sheenlantern: That. D&D made me a basic math prodigy, able to easily add and subtract piles of numbers in seconds or less by glancing at them.
In my head. I can do pencil and paper just fine. I carry a calculator for HeroClix though.
Well, most people can only do simpler equations in their heads alone. Just practice.
I'm in ap physics etc, and i seriously can't do basic math very quickly any more either. When in class i always ask the closest person to me to answer simple problems as i'm writing.
As in, (just an example)
6x=12
I'll ask someone near me what 12 over 6 is (of course now i know it's 2 because i made the problem but usually it'd take me a good 10 seconds to figure that out on my own .-.)
I don't think you're stupid, i'm pretty sure it's because the more advanced mathmatical procedures you learn, you begin to forget the basics and the fundementals, also, i've learned that i rely on my calculator too much, so my most basic math skills are dwindling.
Like right now i don't know 9 x 7
Is it 63?
It's 63 right...?
^ the following does not belong in an AP physics class...
sincerely an AP Black magic teacher
@flashgreatersigneveryone: lol don't make me bring up that first quiz though...
