Girl kills herself to save her dog

PHOENIX, Ariz., Feb. 6 (AP) – Linda Marie Ault killed herself, policemen said, rather than make her dog Beauty pay for her night with a married man.

“I killed her. I killed her. It’s just like I killed her myself,” a detective quoted her grief-stricken father as saying.

“I handed her the gun. I didn’t think she would do anything like that.”

The 21-year-old Arizona State University coed died in a hospital yesterday of a gunshot wound in the head. The police quoted her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ault, as giving this account:

Linda failed to return home from a dance in Tempe Friday night. On Saturday she admitted she had spent the night with an Air Force Lieutenant.

The Aults decided on a punishment that would “wake Linda up.” They ordered her to shoot the dog she had owned about two years.

On Saturday, the Aults and Linda took the dog into the desert near their home. They had the girl dig a shallow grave. Then Mrs. Ault grasped the dog between her hands, and Mr. Ault gave his daughter a .22-caliber pistol and told her to shoot the dog.

Instead, the girl put the pistol to her right temple and shot herself.

The police said there were no charges that could be filed against the parents except possibly cruelty to animals.

For one those "parents" are absolute idiots, and two I could never kill a dog. They should have been charged with assissted suicide since they handed her the gun. People like this are stupid.

That girl must have had more problems than just that dog to just up and kill herself.

Wow, poor girl. But those parents deserve more pain then they got, both for taking their anger out on an innocent animal and for treating their daughter like that. I mean really, force your daughter to kill a living creature she loves because she had sex? I'd probably shoot both of them before shooting myself.

Well if the parents feel that strongly about her not having sex what can you say? Guess she really loved her dog.

Even if she didn't shoot herself wtf are they doing killing a dog because of something she did. Not to mention bringing her out there to dig a grave. There has to be something to charge them with. Even if you're a gun supporter you have to agree these unstable people should lose their license.

She had sex with a man she knew was married. That is very immoral, but doesn't condone the actions the parents took.

That would be all the more worse if they still killed the dog after she sacrificed herself. They better damn well treat that dog better than any pet has ever been treated. I sure as hope those psychos were not aloud to keep that dog though.

I looked this up. Conflicting dates. One says 1968. The other says 1976.

The first says the parents were being charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Ah, sorry. I missed the married part. But still - taking it out on her dog is still equally wrong, not to mention that she is 21 years old and can deal with her own mistakes. Never got the thing with parents controlling and disciplining grown people.

Now we need someone to do the research to find out what happened to these crazies and how badly they f*cked up their other children if they had any.

It's the same as a person killing themselves after a loved one dies. The person who died wouldn't want you to die and would want you to live your life more than they had the chance to live their own themselves.

I wouldn't have killed the dog either but I wouldn't have killed my self. I would have shot into the ground a distance away and wasted all of the ammunition. Anyway f*** those people. What kind of punishment is that? Making a girl kill her own dog? Why punish an innocent animal? Hope they both go to jail for a long time. Also she was a college student right? Which means she was mostly likely at least 18. Even if her parents don't want her to she can legally have sexual intercourse at that age. The only thing they can really do about it is lay down the "If you are living in my house you will live by my rules" thing which makes sense but making her kill her dog is too much. Plenty of other things they could ha done to punish her.
